DeleteTo become a registered professional, you have to get a certain high score their own people wouldn't score in the above-referred tests.
Based on the above argument,I therefore concur that to some extent, writing and speaking English fluently is a sign of intelligence.
Anon 0230 English is a means of communication. You need to score the required mark in TOEFL and IELTS to show you can understand and speak English in order to perform your duties adequately and effectively.
DeleteCommunication is important in order to use your skills as a Nurse or Doctor or other professional.
Speaking English has nothing to do with intelligence. If not we will be saying that those who speak Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, French, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, Italian etc are all not intelligent because they do not speak English
These countries require you to pass the IELTS exam before admission to make sure you can communicate with them fluently in English, the exam is not designed to measure your intelligence.

DeleteEnglish Language is like any other language. That I speak Yoruba well doesn't make me better than someone who doesn't. Its possible my speaking it is because I've been in Yoruba land all my life or people around me speak it more often.
Anyone can speak a language fluently without any sensible content inside. Fluency is just a natural ability to put words together, sensible or not.
Intelligence goes beyond academics. Your ability to take wise decisions, know how to handle issues, see beyond face value, mastery of things et al, is what I define as intelligence.
Funny enough , I'm not so fluent when speaking, I may know what to say, but will just be incoherent. I write better.
Anon 18:41, brilliance mostly have to do with academics. Both should naturally go together, but I've come to discover there are people with academic excellence, who are just plain "mumuish". Let me stop there.

She had repeated class severally that she is still in the same class with children that call her aunty.

She may be dyslexic and need medical attention, not that she is dull.

I work with Indonesians, their English is terrible, but when it comes to 'technical know how', they are the best in what they do.
So Language fluency is never a measure of intelligence.

Nope. Even ppl what are born and schooled in England have bad grammar and speech. If success at work depends on you mastering the language then do what you can to master it.
ReplyDeleteIt depends. It can be a measure of intelligence for non native speakers. For instance, English is the language of instruction in Nig. Your inability to effectively communicate in your language of academic instruction could be an academic deficiency, if you received considerable instruction in said language. That is, if a student received basic education (6-3-3-4) in English, such student should be able to communicate in English. Most people's inability to effectively communicate in English highlights our flawed educational system, inadequate teachers, substandard teaching methods etc. But it won't be used to measure intelligence for a person who was never exposed to English and never received education or academic instruction in English.

This is a yes and no teaser. No because you don't have to speak English to be intelligent. Yes because there are some nuances of the language that needs intelligence to understand and use appropriately.

ReplyDeleteI had a friend in my university days back in naija 2009, this girl spoke better English than me and my friends combined. I can boldly say her use of tenses was the best in the whole school sef, but guess what guys? She can’t spell for shit and can’t read even just three letter words. My God!!! The day I found out I cried real tears. She was too beautiful my God!!! After first semester she was advised to withdraw, she came back 2 more times the same thing. So my answer is NO, it’s not a measure for intelligence. using her and most people I have met in school. I would say my use of English is fair, but there are people I’ve met that can’t answer some comprehension questions but they’re smarter than me in real life.
