    2. If the answer is no, why then does the schools in Europe, America and Australia refuse study admission to anyone with less score in IELTS or TOEFL?
To become a registered professional, you have to get a certain high score their own people wouldn't score in the above-referred tests.
Based on the above argument,I therefore concur that to some extent, writing and speaking English fluently is a sign of intelligence.

    3. Anon 0230 English is a means of communication. You need to score the required mark in TOEFL and IELTS to show you can understand and speak English in order to perform your duties adequately and effectively.
Communication is important in order to use your skills as a Nurse or Doctor or other professional.
Speaking English has nothing to do with intelligence. If not we will be saying that those who speak Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, French, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, Italian etc are all not intelligent because they do not speak English

    4. These countries require you to pass the IELTS exam before admission to make sure you can communicate with them fluently in English, the exam is not designed to measure your intelligence.

    3. @Anon 18:06, Good spoken English is not a measure of either of the two.(intelligence or brilliance)

English Language is like any other language. That I speak Yoruba well doesn't make me better than someone who doesn't. Its possible my speaking it is because I've been in Yoruba land all my life or people around me speak it more often.

Anyone can speak a language fluently without any sensible content inside. Fluency is just a natural ability to put words together, sensible or not.

Intelligence goes beyond academics. Your ability to take wise decisions, know how to handle issues, see beyond face value, mastery of things et al, is what I define as intelligence.

Funny enough , I'm not so fluent when speaking, I may know what to say, but will just be incoherent. I write better.

Anon 18:41, brilliance mostly have to do with academics. Both should naturally go together, but I've come to discover there are people with academic excellence, who are just plain "mumuish". Let me stop there.

      I hope this helps.

      What do you really mean?
I've heard a lot of the girls here complain that their spouse, fiance, boyfriend
does not speak good English. Most times accent is added to get you to part your legs,
      be used and dumped.

  5. The person is smart to have learnt a second language and be fluent.
But intelligence is a behavioral trait learnt from childhood, it is akin to being wise in a truthful sense; ability to exercise good judgment when faced with issues of life and has got nothing to do with language.

    2. Bless u. I didn't even see this before writing mine up there.

However , intelligence is never learnt. It is natural and innate. It can be enhanced though, but never learnt.

      Delete
    3. Is enhancement not a form of learning?

  6. No! It's not. English is just like any other dialect like Yoruba and Hausa, I see no reason why it should be used as a measure of one's intelligence.

    1. You're very correct.
Lemme ask, those Chinese high tech guys with great electronics knowledge, do they speak English?
I work with Indonesians, their English is terrible, but when it comes to 'technical know how', they are the best in what they do.
So Language fluency is never a measure of intelligence.
I even wonder why English is tagged with intelligence in the first place.

  9. Well, speaking in English and being Intelligent, are two different things as one has no dependence on the other. So, I will say No, English isn’t a measure or yardstick to measure intelligence.

  10. There are some Daft English men,so NO,proficiency in English is not a measure of intelligence

  11. To me,is not a measure of intelligence. English belongs to the colonialist.I have seen this thread on nairaland.Intelligence spans beyond been bookworm. Intelligence extends it tentacles to life issues. In most cases,is not English language that will save you from life battles.People going to CAC understands that English will not the witches and wizard from visiting you.

  15. I'm still trying to look for the correlation in this teaser
what if English isn't my lingua franca or native tongue does it means I'm not intelligent?
    Of course not!!!!
Fluent English is definitely not a yard stick for intelligence

    ReplyDelete
  16. Nope. Even ppl what are born and schooled in England have bad grammar and speech. If success at work depends on you mastering the language then do what you can to master it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It depends. It can be a measure of intelligence for non native speakers. For instance, English is the language of instruction in Nig. Your inability to effectively communicate in your language of academic instruction could be an academic deficiency, if you received considerable instruction in said language. That is, if a student received basic education (6-3-3-4) in English, such student should be able to communicate in English. Most people's inability to effectively communicate in English highlights our flawed educational system, inadequate teachers, substandard teaching methods etc. But it won't be used to measure intelligence for a person who was never exposed to English and never received education or academic instruction in English.

Also, it cannot be a measure of intelligence for native speakers of English like Americans, British etc

    1. This is a yes and no teaser. No because you don't have to speak English to be intelligent. Yes because there are some nuances of the language that needs intelligence to understand and use appropriately.

  18. No. English language is like any other languages e. g. Spanish, French, German etc

  19. I had a friend in my university days back in naija 2009, this girl spoke better English than me and my friends combined. I can boldly say her use of tenses was the best in the whole school sef, but guess what guys? She can’t spell for shit and can’t read even just three letter words. My God!!! The day I found out I cried real tears. She was too beautiful my God!!! After first semester she was advised to withdraw, she came back 2 more times the same thing. So my answer is NO, it’s not a measure for intelligence. using her and most people I have met in school. I would say my use of English is fair, but there are people I’ve met that can’t answer some comprehension questions but they’re smarter than me in real life.

  20. During my secondary school days, the most brilliant boy then can't express himself in English language but he's very very intelligent, overall best student, but me I speak better than him but not as intelligent than him
