Mama Tee Series - Should Parents Choose Their Kids Career Path?

I bet you never really gave this a second thought?

I would say they should guide their children in the right path to good careers.

I used to be of the opinion that it was bad for parents to interfere in their children's career but with the heartbreaking calls I get from my cousin these days, I have a change of heart now.

In those days, when we were about to write JAMB and WAEC, you will see some parents hustling 'special centres' for their children so they can pass in one sitting. After that, they make sure the children pick good courses, I mean marketable and lucrative courses in the higher institution. They guide these youngsters in the right career paths. Kudos to such parents.

You would agree with me that graduates of some courses these days especially Management courses are just everywhere searching for good jobs to no avail. My cousin is one of them.

Our own parents in those days did not care or let me say they were ignorant of this. They left us to our choices and some of us copied friends. In our senior secondary, we ran away from science class where we were and followed friends to Commercial and Arts classes instead. As a result, we ended up in Higher institutions with 'anyhow' courses. All these, our parents did not know.

My cousin's case is more pathetic as he is a man. After school, he couldn't get any tangible thing to do, he decided to learn a skill. He learned Aluminium Fabrication, he makes doors, windows and the rest. As it is now, that too is not helping him as he needs the right connection to get good jobs asides the occasional show glass and two windows that he gets to do.

His matter is even made worse by the fact that he lives in Kwara state. He once told me that people advised him to add juju to his work because that is what others do to get contracts, he said some people that he knows are into it and they even invite him to join them to do their jobs for a token when they get big jobs. He also said an Islamic cleric approached him and also advised him to do something, he said the 'Alfa' offered to help him for a fee of 20k. I told him not to try it.

So he got a job in 2016 and worked for a few months before the company folded up.

He called me few months ago to ask if he could come join me in Lagos, I told him he needs to start applying for jobs here and when he is asked to resume, then he can come join me.

Don't blame me my people, things are hard, I cannot house someone who is not working. Asides feeding, I will have to give him transport fare to interviews and job hunting.

Two days ago, he called again and was sounding so depressed and empty. I don't know what to do, I will keep praying for him.

  4. You don't choose a career path for your kids, but via his/her subject strenght and weakness you will know what they are likely to study which you will ask them; their reply will depend on how you will encourage them. Rmbr in Nigeria you can study anything and work anywhere. So i don't believe in the force, sometimes you might even get a private tutor to help brush the weakness for them to attain what they desire. No child is dumb..its all about the method of teaching and the encouragement by teachers and the parents.

  5. A sharp no to that.
Let the kids choose while parents counsel AND actively support their children.

    1. My Dear sister. Create the kind of passion and strength you desire from them right from childhood, if not, they may have strength and passion for dancing or carrying gun like a soldier or policeman. Lol

  8. I will guide and advice them on the career path to follow. I know what I suffered getting a job as a management graduate coupled with the professional certification I have. Management, social science graduates are just everywhere and because of this, employers are not willing to pay a good sum knowing that they have options everywhere should one refuse.

I'll definitely advice my kids to tow the medical, engineering lane except management and they will also go for professional programs in their field of study. It's needed abeg. Management courses are no more lucrative and it's a no no for me.

  9. I remember how my mum wanted Mr to study medicine because all her sings had 2kids each in medical line and my bro read anatomy,I'm always glad I told her I'm not that brilliant😂😂

  10. Yea.. Parents should guide and not interfere with their children's career.
Back in time..most of my sec class mates that was forced to do science ended up rushing back to art and commercial after a whole wasted year.
If all parents want their children to read professional courses who would now read the unprofessional ones??

  11. This is one of the reasons why there are so many heartless people in careers that should otherwise have empathetic and nurturing people.
For example, medicine is a very common choice for parents. Some will even go as far as to pay lectures off so their kids pass and become doctors. These same doctors will now start diagnosing cancer as malaria; thyphoid as flu; performing quack surgeries etc. As there is no passion for that career, they mistreat patients, and will not be touched when someone without enough funds dies next to them, despite pleading from the patient's family.

Parents shouldn't force careers. Instead they should steer their kids towards their passion, and hone their skills. This same passion has turned Oprah (media); Zucherberg (tech); G. Ramsey (culinary) into wealthy people.

This same passion is the reason why that lecturer dressed up as Spiderman to go and teach his students, despite there being a strike!

  12. Wmy dad wanted all of us to be doctors, so we were all steered towards science n med/surg, only me stubbornly veered of into management, and its only me that doesn't have a job, hehehehehehe, all the docs have excelled...life ehn, hahahahaa.

  13. Check the areas you kids are good at and guide them. Some children are science inclined while some are art inclined. You cannot force a child who is not science inclined into medicine because he can't cope. So know your children's weak points and strong points, then guide them.

  14. Hubby and I are social scientists, I will try as much as we can to make the environment friendly for pure sciences so that our kids can tow a different lane if they want to.

My mum really wanted me to be a nurse but I told myself chemistry and physics ain't my stuff, but when I kook back now, I know I could have done better if only i'd put in more effort or had a personal teacher to tutor me.

    1. That’s just me o, I was one of the best in arts, but I knew if I had used my brain for sciences I could have excelled as well, i was selfish cus I just wanted to be the best where I was, I will push my kids to do more o, even if it means schooling abroad, God help me

    2. Thank you
I was the best in my class then (commercial). I ran from science because of physics , Chemistry. If I had stayed back and put in more effort, I believe I would have done well, at least well enough to go for nursing at least . I'm even thinking of going back to school and become a nurse. Hope it is not too late in Nigeria.
Princess intelligentsia and other nurses, do you have advanced women in your school?

  17. I believe parents should guide their children's decision of a career path. I thank God everyday that my parents and uncle insisted on the course to study instead of what I had earlier wanted. I don't know what I was thinking back then. Thank u Mum, thank u Ndaa.

  18. Very important topic! In as much as it is not advisable to choose careers for your wards, you will do well to stimulate them early in life. The world is a global village and frankly everything sells if you properly strategize,be visible and be well branded. We all have multiple 'intelligencies' through play in the formative years, stimulate your child's interest in a lot of things (have toys, books, take them on outings) but observe what strikes their fancy the most. At the end of it all, whatever career the child finally decides on (fully armed with relevant information), he/she will still be armed with a lot of skills, to create multiple sources of income and experience satisfaction.

  19. I do not think Parents should choose a course of study for their kids... Every child has innate skills and interest,a parent should guide the child in the area that the child is interested in.Professional course no be by Force.I know dozens of people who did courses to please their parents, many are fraustrated, others are doing other things. But in Nigeria now,a degree won't always sustain you so we all need Marketable skills to add to the education!!!

  21. Blackberry you see what I'm saying? Now you are the only one without a job.
Management courses are not lucrative anymore, they are everywhere. Even Accountancy that was the most revered among them is now like pure water. I will encourage my children from primary level to love science subjects. I will get them home tutors and encourage extra lessons for them to excel in these subjects and then guide them into good science based courses in higher institution. When a child is good in Physics, Chemistry, further maths and the rest, he/she won't hesitate to pick a science based course in the university.
