NBA Embarks On 2 Day Protest Over CJN's Suspension And Order Lawyers To Boycott Courts In Nigeria

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has ordered every legal practitioner in the country to boycott every court in the country and refrain from offering any form of legal service, in the next two days.

The NBA, which had since condemned President Buhari’s action as a coup against the judiciary and a subversion of the Nigerian constitution, took the decision for lawyers to boycott all court related activities, at the end of its National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Abuja.

NBA which is the umbrella body of lawyers in the country, said the action was to protest the arbitrary suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, by President Muhammadu Buhari. President Buhari had on Friday, suspended Onnoghen and appointed the most senior jurist of the apex court, Justice Tanko Muhammad to take over the leadership of the judiciary as the Acting CJN.

  2. I have been waiting for PROF/SAN/PASTOR Osinbanjo to make a statement on this matter but I have not seen any. This Osibanjo of a man is a disappointment to Christains and Nigerians as a whole. Again why will Buhari use a Northerna and his namesake to replace him? Too many questions but no answer. @Blessed Princess

Lawyers ignored the NBA directive and went abut their normal business today. It is only PDP and their online warriors that are in denial about the finality of their man's removal.

  4. Martin Niemoller(1892-1984) Lutheran Pastor in Germany said:

"First, they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out---because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--- because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me --- and there was no one left to speak for me".

If we don't stand up now to condemn and protest this arbitrariness, tomorrow more serious injustice and desecration will be unleashed by the government on other arms and institution of government.

  9. Presently, I am in court. Lawyers are plenty and the judge is sitting as it is.

Truth is most lawyers will not heed that instruction being that most of us are subjected to worse treatments and nobody bats an eyelid. The CJN has admitted to not declaring his assets. Why not face his trial in peace rather than subjecting the bar to a needless boycott.

How many press statements has the NBA issues and how many times has courts been boycotted due to inhumane treatment of lawyers across the country especially by the police and other security agencies.

Until The NBA can answer this question and with all honesty, then they should drink cold water and rest.
