Kaduna Gov El-Rufai Extends Maternity Leave To 6 Months

Governor Nasir El Rufai has extended the maternity period for women in public service in Kaduna State from three to six months in order to promote healthy development of children through prolong breast feeding.

In his inaugural address shortly after being sworn in on Wednesday May 29th, Governor El Rufai, who was flanked by his Deputy, Dr Hadiza Balarabe apologised to the people of the state for what he said was the difficult decisions that he will take in his second term. The governor, who sounded conciliatory in his 15 minutes speech enjoined every body living in Kaduna State to live in peace with one another, saying that there can be no development without peace.

  6. Why? Why is there no extension of paternity leave as well? If I take the 6months and decide not to breast feed nko? Why not encourage working from home or offices providing crèche for their staff?

How does 6 months help the country? How does it improve productivity? After 6 months, she comes back pregnant. Abeg let’s be serious for once in Nigeria.

    2. When you become a mother, you will understand better. When my child was 3 months, there was no way I could entrust him with any other person. No I couldn't and I know a lot of mothers are / were in this situation. They go back to work after 1 , 2 or 3 months because they have no choice.
In the abroad you get 1 full year if you are a permanent staff.

    3. Anon 13:36, if you haven’t thrown the “when you become a mother... line” it would have shocked me because I would wonder if you’re Nigerian.

If you want to counter my opinion, do so intelligently with facts. Stop letting emotions cloud your judgement. Mention the exact companies abroad that allow 1 year maternity leave. Let me give you expo, Netflix does this but do you know the productivity levels of their staff? Do you know how much profit they rake in? Imagine yourself as a business owner or CEO and apply this 1 year paid maternity benefit you speak of to all the women who work for you. This is not what Nigeria needs at least not the civil service with their lackadaisical attitude to work. Give them 5 years maternity leave if you want but let it be “work from home”, flexibility at work increases productivity. Also, let parents be closer to their kids so they don’t have to rely entirely on strangers - Crèche at work would help. Have lactation rooms and crèche something companies like Google, Microsoft, Twitter etc have. Nigerian companies like Paystack are adopting this models. Also, what’s the role of your partner if you think staying home for 1 year is your right. Sheryl Sandberg is the COO of Facebook, go and read her book on how she did her job and played her role as a mother. If you like stay home for 10 years, if you’re a bad mother you’d still be one. Little wonder a lot of women don’t move up the ladder in orgs because you all want empathy as if that’s how money is made. Businesses are created to make profit, they are not charity orgs.

    4. No offence meant I'm sure but in reality a 3 month old baby is still so small. Most mothers if not for harsh economy would gladly extend their leave without pay sef. I guess that's why she asked if you are a mother. Just to drive home her point. And yes several people get up to one year maternity abroad and take more time without pay. Several of my friends did this and some stayed up to a full year with their children. Being at work with your mind constantly on your baby at home is hardly productive either. But we are used to the hard life so someone who wants to spend 6 months with her baby is termed unproductive. And I can bet left to some employers even that 3 months is too much!!

    5. Doppelganger this one time you have spoken like an arse.
Australia grants 1yr maternity leave to mothers with pay reduction...and women are still productive.
WHO recommends a 6months exclusive breastfeeding for infants for immunity and brain development, most mothers stop at 3months due constraints of returning to work...while some others like me who can afford to take an extra 3 months unpaid leave to complete the 6months exclusive bf program.
That you 'think' you would choose not to breastfeed doesn't make the state's decision bad
A 3 month old baby has no business in a creche, that you even think it's an option leaves me flabbergasted....but I wouldn't throw the 'when you become a mother' line at you cos ....oh well, you are simply not one yet and would only understand some things when you are.

    6. Anon 14:52, she had no point to drive rather than be condescending. I am not against 6 months or 1year leave I’m only asking that other options should be explored. This person didn’t even read my comment to assimilate it before responding again. Also a lot of mothers take more time without pay, it happens often and this is why all orgs private or public should incorporate work creches. I already said these things so no need to be repetitive.

Anon 15:33, I’m an arse but you are still dumb. You can exclusive breastfeed with the use of bottles and the pump on the go.
There is something called expressing and that’s why I mentioned providing lactating rooms. I also mentioned CRÈCHE AT WORK. Your child is right there with you while you work under supervised and dedicated staff that the company recruits. I have colleagues and friends who resume work and have to run to the toilet to use their pump, I feel sorry for them because it’s uncomfortable. The earlier you understand that no amount of time away from work to take care of your child would reduce the guilt whenever you eventually resume work the better.

It’s not my fault that you’re lazy and daft at the same time. Fortunately for you, I’m not your employer so stop getting emotional. You won’t be the first woman to resume work 3 months after having a baby. Perhaps, if you spent time during your 6months to read a book or two you’d have comprehension skills but don’t let my rant stop you.

Oh by the way, this line “when you become a mother” is silly and just shows you’re the kind to tell women who adopt that they aren’t truly mothers because they didn’t experience labor. You’d be fine in the end though. Hugs and kisses 😘

    7. Is this the Doppel if my dreams spewing trash here, a lady I hold in the highest esteem typing like a typical slave driver, I’m disappointed. Do you know what it takes to nurture a baby, you typed breast pump test al, don’t you consider the stress taking the baby to work, leaving the baby while you work, how can you be productive when you leave your baby unattended to, a baby you knew what you went through before having him or her, Ms.Sandberg you posted about, I work with her and I have to say this, didn’t She acknowledged She had help or you think She is an average Jane, I’m quite disappointed in you Doppel, women are their own worst enemies, some countries allow up to three years paid leave, some offers paid paternity leave up to three months, because they know what it takes to nurture a baby, so you meant a working mother is indispensable or the work can’t go into bankruptcy, so na to die on top someone’s work, abeg go I no love you again,I might if you reconsider your stance sha

    9. I totally get what Doppelgänger is saying. But still we are applauding the fact that it’s been increased to 6 months. Who knows maybe the next governor would add more benefits to it. It’s gradual step and if we are to be realistic dopple, Nigeria won’t change over night. At least he’s starting somewhere.

  12. That is a good one... A new mother can decide to breastfeed or not to breastfeed her baby, (I support mothers breastfeeding their newborn) afterall, some women don't even have breast milk. But, that six months of rest and attending to your newborn is very important and if used well, will help create a very special bond between mother and child.
If a woman decides to get pregnant again within the six months of maternity leave, she will be the one to carry her cross.

Most nursing mothers who breastfeed their newborn hardly get pregnant anyways.

I did nine months exclusive breastfeeding and my period started again after ten months.

As for the men, they can be given between two to three months to help with caring for the baby and also building special bond with their newborn.

  14. It's a good policy, I must say. But then, I doubt the intent behind it. Hope they will be paid during the six months? Creches at work is something foreign companies do. Its a good middle ground
