Prof Wole Soyinka Asked To Get Up From A Flight Seat By Young Nigerian Man

This is a Narrative of how a young Nigerian man asked Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka to vacate a seat for him..................

''@professorwolesoyinka#celebrategreatness#relationshipsmatter met one of the greatest Nigerians walking the earth today and as with other times, he was genteel, witty, forthright and humble. My smile gives me away as he permitted the picture whereas he would have preferred to get back to his newspapers.

Then we boarded the flight and after assisting him with his bags, he took the window seat and promptly started reading again.

A few minutes later this young man, baseball cap, t-shirt to show his muscled chest and tattooed biceps boards the plane and tells Prof he is on his seat (which he was).

Those of us including the cabin crew tried to reason with Bobo Fine to let the old man be but the chap refused. He insisted Prof should vacate his window seat, which the old man quietly did for his original aisle seat next to him.

I couldn’t understand how we got to this point where we no longer have respect for elders, even if are so ignorant of the great global personalities in our midst. Is it too much to ask that an elderly man be allowed to remain in a seat allotted to you in the same business class cabin and the same row?
Na wa o!''

In Germany once an old person enters a Bus or a train and there is no empty seat, people give up their seats to make sure they seat..I have never really asked if it is a must but the love with which they do it is awesome.
Over the weekend i was abroad and decided to take the Bus so that my Bambinis could look around...The bus was so full with no empty seat but a nice young man gave up his seat for me...lol
What he did was not wrong but he could have let the old prof take the seat...costs nothing!!!

  1. Very disrespectful guy.
I don’t know how we got here.
There were times I had to vacate my seat for elderly ones cos of the comfort.
It does not take anything to be nice to people.

    1. Lets look at this from another point of view. The guy did no wrong. All he did,was asked for his allocated seat nothing more. If the prof, wanted that seat,he would have asked the young man politely immediately the guy arrieved to claim his seat. This is not about respect here, but what is rightfully his.

    2. I hope people know there are people that like window seats and specifically request for it even in advance by checking in online. And again a business class ticket aint cheap. I cant spend over a million on a seat and not get EXACTLY what I requested for.
Also airlines assign each seat by name for orderliness on the plane and for SAFETY. Each passenger is accounted for by the seat they are assigned to. God forbid there is a crash, each seat and each aisle is accounted for and each person can be traced.
Now I understand respect and I do give up seats for the elderly and pregnant on the train/bus but most times I don't even seat in their assigned section at all. I just stand if there are no seats. i don't seat on those marked specifically for elderly/pregnant.
The guy could have just allowed him being an elderly person. But i wont also rebuke the guy also, some people may feel claustrophobic on a flight, and sitting by the window keeps them calmer. i for one don't care either way where i seat bcos i knock off once i enter a flight, but certain ppl have fears, phobia's and specific compulsions while flying. Some like me don't like window seat, i shut the blind sef, don't want to see the sky. But for some men it is a high for them and it makes their flying pleasurable.
This is my VIEW, thank you as you accept it as mine without insults, just as i have yours.

    9. Nigerians with their sense of entitlement. Woke Soyinka was assigned a seat, he left his seat and sat on someone's seat without permission. The person asked for his seat and you called him disrespectful. Woke should have respected the young man by asking him to switch. I guess in Nigeria, young people don't deserve respect.
Btw, if it's the same Soyinka that supported that little tyrant called Buhari, then shame on him. Shameless old deceitful hypocrite. He should thank God that it wasn't my seat that he took. He would have learned how not to disrespect people.
I guess that young man should have looked for a younger person and take their seat. No wonder Jesus wept.

    10. I'll also do same if I were the man. Nothing wrong in what he did!

    11. Nigerians and the reason we don't make progress....oyibo cannot think like this....entitlement mentality. why are seats assigned. some people check in online and choose seats...why will I allow an old man deprive me of what I choose? Soyinka is educated and should know better.stella your comparism is very different. this are assigned seats. I would politely tell anyone on my assigned seat to get up. if you give me a genuine reason or there is free sitting I can allow you but I will let you know that was my seat...Nigerians and stupid sentiments, old man, my village, my tribe, my church etc is why we allow people get away with so much

      Delete
    12. Wole Soyinka would have done same in his younger days. He started a confraternity cos yh,thats him in his own youth

    13. As far as I'm concerned the guy did no wrong. I always reserve my seat online and make sure its by the window. Prof Wole Soyinka has been travelling for years and knows that whatever seat is being allocated to you is where you sit, why sit on another person's seat? If the guy is white would it be a different case?
Sentiment no go kee Nigerians 🙄😏😏

    14. Stella, senior citizens, people with kids and disabled have priority seating on buses abroad. That is different from airplane seat which is assigned to passengers. Foreign airlines would ask everyone to make sure they are on their seat. You could change once the plane in airborne but they frown on people switching seats before they submit the manifest of passengers on board. When you hear announcements for a passenger, it's because the passenger's seat is empty when they have record of the passenger checking in at the airport etc.
The young man did nothing wrong. He should have asked him to swap with him instead of taking the young man's seat like his birth right.

    15. Anonymous if ur papa sits and I tell him to get up from my sit will u be happy

      Delete
  2. Whose seat was he supposed to sit on while the professor took his? Nigerians are so hypocritical. When did it become respect to let someone sit on the seat you were allotted on a flight, because they're older? Abroad, you get up in buses for older people, wheelchair users and women with buggies and children mainly cos it's a SAFETY issue which is why those allocated spaces are designed like that. No council or transportation provider wants to be shelling out money for a lawsuit. People may get up for older people and visibly pregnant women out of courtesy but a) it doesn't necessarily mean they're respectful and b) standing through three bus stops or even more isn't the same as an entire flight journey, biko.

    1. See dem. They don dey show themselves.
Nobody said it was right or wrong.
They only said it wasn't respectful .
Giving someone your seat to take theirs is just a sacrifice that comes from a place of love.
I'm not surprised , many Nigerians have zero joy in their heart.
So, how could they give any out?.
I once took a flight in London and was separated from my 5year old son.
I politely asked the "black" man next to me to please exchange seats with him, and he refused. I didn't get angry or anything, cos he was within his right.
When i went to fasten my son's belt, the white lady next to him offered immediately to swap seats with me.
Its not a right or wrong issue.
Its just something that comes from a place of love, like helping strangers with their bags, helping the woman with two kids in d keke or bus to manage some of the kids or bring them down from d bus.

      Delete
    2. And where here does it say the man will stand on a flight? What is so hypocritical about respect?

There are already marked buggy spaces on London buses and it's mandatory that you get up if you sat there prior to when a buggy user boards the bus. But it is not compulsory to get up for an older person or a pregnant one etc and you do it out of the kindness of your heart.

So,10:19, if there wasn't a written law to do so for the physically challenged, aged, pregnant etc, you will not be compassionate enough to do so?

I am still somewhat at a loss because I truly do not understand how it's hypocrisy to show respect even at an inconvenience to self. Wow!

      Delete
    3. It was just a case of exchanging a window seat for an aisle seat so it wouldn't have mattered much. Same row, just let him stay by the window while he takes the aisle seat. Its just being respectful.

    8. Lol! When you want to sit in a particular spot on a plane, you:
      a) book the seat you want, even if it means paying extra
      b) ASK the owner politely to change
      c) buy or charter a private jet.

Not make assumptions that you'll be given the seat for whatever reason. FYI, it is DISRESPECTFUL for a well-travelled, exposed public figure such as Soyinka to sit in a seat he knows he's not entitled to cos he knows he didn't pay for it, refuse to move and put others in the uncomfortable position of having to try to bully the rightful owner into giving up his seat. Fgs, he can read seat numbers (he's a Nobel Laureate afterall) so he knew where his own seat was. Where I'd have had a problem is if the young man was rude. The call-out didn't say he was.

      Delete
    9. The prof is an intelligent erudite,so l am surprised he sat in the seat that was not allotted to him. Was he banking on someone conceding that seat to him? I am old school and traditional, but l won't blame someone for claiming his own seat in a business class section.
Why are we not considering the young man's medical or psychological reason? Why did the prof not ask for the window seat?
If someone had taken the prof's seat(especially a white person), he would have written an article or a poem about it.
Baba should always do the needful,l beg. Sebi,he is an activist and a social crusader!

An elderly woman once asked that she sits on the aisle, because she had phobia for fight windows ( I don't like it either) I didn't even think it twice to do her that favour, even in my inconvenience. The elderly, disabled and children and treated with great respect and care abroad. It used to be so her in Nigeria but not anymore...#sad

    7. Yemi7up with all the respect and value Africans have for elder where has it taken us to? Lmao! Respect is reciprocal. He already disrespected himself and the guy by sitting on the sit allocated to the guy. If you don’t want young people to disrespect you, you must not do what will make them disrespect you. You weren’t there so don’t say what you don’t know. You don’t even know if prof snubbed the guy, you don’t know if he snubbed the guy, you don’t know if he was rude to the guy (elders can also be rude) l. But it’s obvious he refused to get up, reason why people and cabin crew on board were begging the guy to forfeit the seat. Next time he will ask before sitting on a seat allocated to another or better still he will just sit on his own seat no.

    2. If you raise your child to be a mugu he will always get cheated because this is a capitalist world where the winners play by the rules and speak up when things don’t favour them. Fake meekness only gets children abused and unable to benefit from systems that favour others. Nigerian children are already behind and only do well when they are able to adjust to international systems, or first class students in Nigeria wouldn’t be sent abroad to study almost automatically. Why is that ?

      Delete
    3. It has got nothing to do with fake meekness or being cheated. What would it have cost him to take the professor’s seat? If not for anything all that grey hair and people asking him to. I’m all for standing up for ones right but this? Not nice.

Away from one of my favorite persons on earth though, there was a time I was to travel by plane, happened to have an open ticket for over a year and wanted to use it. I was told to pay more money for business class as economy was full. I paid. I went to board and just sat by a window in economy only for the seat owner to come tell me to get up. To be truthful then I didn’t know much about seats on a plane. I thought you sit anywhere. I had to go locate my seat and through out the flight I was marveling at what I would have missed due to ignorance.

I had sat on a seat not allocated to me and there were other vacant seats nearby but when those couple came in, they wouldn't budge so I had to get up and seat opposite them which was my rightful seat.

And you will find that this individual who assumes he is being cool and that "oyinbos" are like that has probably never stepped out of the country.

I was at a gathering recently and got up to take a call. When I returned, a girl of about 10-12 had moved my bag and sat down.

I got back, waited a beat and when she didn't get up, I asked her to get up. She actually tried to talk back, I used my mother's "eyes effect" and that was that.

I don't know about anywhere else in the world, but we have a major crisis on our hands in Nigeria. The problem however is that parents that should act are mostly the ones going about it the wrong way. We think we are new generation parents.

Let me share a personal story. I live in Ibadan and at a time, I worked in Iwo, Osun State. I used to shuttle between Ibadan and Iwo. I come to Ibadan on Fridays and I leave for Iwo on Sundays. One Sunday, I couldn't leave Ib due to exigencies so I had to leave very early the next day. When I got to the park, there were about three seats left so I picked one which was by the door. One old woman came with two younger ladies who I believed they were her children. Now remember, there were two seats left and they were three. The two ladies went in. I had to stand outside so they could enter the bus because my seat was by the door. I told them and mama "This is my seat please". After the ladies went in, mama too made to enter "Mama please I'm on this seat" I told her again. I assumed maybe one of her daughters wanted to lap her or something. You won't believe mama went inside and SAT on my seat. "Mama I told you this was my seat" I was almost pissed but I gave her the benefit of doubt maybe she couldn't hear well. "Which seat? Did I meet anybody there?" Ok then I became fully pissed. It took intervention of people from the park, I would have dragged this mama down from the bus. People in the bus were telling me I don't have respect. Please hold your respect right there. Firstly, I was running late. Secondly, If this mama had asked nicely without the mago mago she did, I would have given her my seat. Anyways, one of her ladies sat on the engine for her to sit. I had my own sit. Emi o raye oshi.

Giving out freely is different from taking it by force and trying to oppress me to give it off. Prof just went there and sat down. It's different from the young man seeing him standing and ignoring him. As an elder, I too should conduct myself accordingly. I will gladly give away my seat to a pregnant or elderly person who's standing but don't just try to take it from me by force.

If the prof wanted a window seat, he should have requested for one. The bus argument is very weak Stella because 1). It’s for health and safety reasons 2). You are standing up for someone without a seat, not someone who already has one but would rather bully you out of yours.

  25. Imagine excusing this madness on a plane? And using bus analogies are unintelligent at best because specific seats are not paid for and there are designated areas for pregnant women and old people. People check in online and even pay extra for specific seats, and abroad Wole Soyinka and everyone defending him would never do such a thing or risk getting booted off or even asked to pay a fine. When Soyinka was a professor abroad he had teenage students calling him by his name and he called his own professors by name that have all gone off to change the world positively, yet in Nigeria he has no issues using his age to bully. And we wonder where our fake respect has gotten us, even where it’s wrong. There’s no way that the boy is wrong, and imagine the writer describing the boys tattoo and outfit meaning we’re supposed to judge him for that? Our education and value system is lower than low. If you don’t see how this is a serious problem, you are part of the problem. Sometimes maturity is about being angry not letting things go

    3. Well said. Using bus analogy is indeed WRONG as the two are completely different. You either choose your seat or the airline will allocate a seat to you while on the bus, the seats are not allocated instead a designated space is given for old people and pregnant women.

Give respect to whom respect is due. Respect is not an entitlement, it is not your right instead it is earned and freely given.

To go as low as describing the young man's look to buttress this point is indeed uncalled for and unfair.

He may have even paid for the seat or not. The point is that he made an effort to pick out his seat and then someone, an elder wants to take it away from him. What does he get for asking for something that is rightfully his? guilt trip to allow his elder seat in his seat. I bet if it was in different case, perphas no avaliable seat on a bus or anywhere else, he would stand up for his elder to have a seat. But that is not the case here. They both had seats!!!. He demanded for his seat.

If there was accident, the insurance company will not pay out the premium to his family members because he was not on his allocated seat even so if he had changed and it was not properly logged into the system by crew. His death will be in vain.

Mr Wole Soyinka and I say this in humility and with all due respect should not have sat down on that seat. And he should speak up and clear out this issue and render an apology to and on behalf of the young man. He does not deserve all this uproar for insisting on his right.

He should praise him for it as this is what the youths and people of today should emulate and demand for their right (peacefully) perphas Nigeria as a whole will become a better Country.

  33. Giving up your seat is different from this, you get into the plane and you see someone on your seat what do you do? you tell the person that he or she is on your seat. they person choose the seat number because he or she went to sit close to the window. its left for the original owner to allow you sit there or not to sit there.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I stand to be corrected but I don't think the guy was wrong if he went by it politely. It's a different case if the good professor didn't have a sit at all and the young man refused to offer him his. Respect is reciprocal; the prof shouldn't have sat on someone else's seat. If he so desires a window seat, he should have asked before his boarding pass handed to him but if he's unable to do that, nothing stops him from being on his designated seat until the owner of the window seat comes then negotiate a seat swap with him politely.

We are Africans and people walk around with all sort of beliefs and superstitions. What if the young man has some superstitious belief about his seat being swapped. Has he thought of how uncomfortable he would be during the flight? We must always respect our elders but elders should learn to stop bullying the younger ones with age aswell.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The young man did nothing wrong, Prof would have just politely asked to swap seats.if I was d young man in question I would have told the Prof that was my seat and still let him have it not because he is old but because of the respect I personally have for his person.

    ReplyDelete
  40. This is a difficult one.

On the one hand, it's imperative that everyone accords elderly people with respect and dignity because old age makes people vulnerable and also due to culture. The elderly person doesn't have to be famous or celebrated before they deserve to be treated with respect. WE WILL ALL GET OLD, ALL OF US! (I'M SHOUTING LOL)

On the other hand, this is a person's seat that they paid for and specifically chose for themselves. They had a right to have the seat that they chose and had to assert their right to get it back when another person took it. The person who took the seat happened to be Professor Wole Soyinka but could have been any old man.

The demeanor and attitude of the person who wanted their seat back also matters. He has a right to be assertive and even refuse to allow Professor Soyinka to stay in the seat. I didn't read anywhere that he was rude or abusive to Professor Soyinka.

I had to reclaim my seat once but didn't want any altercation so I spoke to the airline staff and requested that they sort it out, thankfully they did and the person moved. Maybe I'm biased but I hate people taking other people's allocated seats.

I like Professor Wole Soyinka, never met him but I really respect him.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The writer painted the young man in a bad light just by the extreme measures he went to give us the physical description of him. He created a picture that would make the guy seem like a gangster, ill-mannered person. If the Prof had asked the guy to switch seats with him and the guy react aggressively and insulting, I would have said he was rude. Prof. boarded a plane and took the seat allocated to someone else. He did not put the other person into consideration when he left the seat allocated to him. The guy was within his right to demand that Prof. vacates his seat. it had absolutely nothing to do with respect. if we talk about respect, then Prof. should have waited for the owner of the seat and ask him properly before occupying said seat. Prof. paid for his seat the same way the young man did. Let's not be biased and force people to inconvenience themselves just because we want to hide under the guise of 'Respect'.

  44. The poster is very wrong. Please, you people should stop with this mindset of shutting people down because they want what rightly belongs to them.

Stella, all over Europe, every bus, trolley, trains and trams have priority seats. They are meant for the elderly 🧓🏽, sick, nursing mothers, mothers with toddlers (including people that walks with crutches) if perchance you're seated on the seat and one of the aforementioned passengers comes in, the right thing to do is to get up and allow them sit.

Now, the young man booked a plane and probably ticked the window 💺, that seat was his rightful seat and asking the great professor to get up from his seat wasn't in anyway wrong as far as, he did not make any fuss about it.
Doing things orderly no matter who is involved is very important but, very difficult in Nigeria because most people are hypocrites and do not play by the rules.

Same thing happened to me when a "black man" tried to take my seat position in a flight, he was traveling with multiple girls and wanted them to be around him. He wasn't even polite about it and I made sure the girl that took my seat exited that seat. They tried to bully me but, I refused to do the wrong and called them to order through the flight attendance.
Black man problem, always disobeying simple order, but quick to cry out when things do not work in their favour and quick to scream about the shortcomings of the government.

For the prof to have gotten up from the seat showed he acknowledged that the boy was right and might have also admired the boy's courage to speak up; otherwise I am sure one bombastic grammar would have been enough to throw the boy off the seat.

The young man did the right thing on insisting to occupy the seat he chose. This is not about respecting elders it is about abiding by the rules of law on a flight. Why did this notable man even choose to sit in someone else's seat when he was assigned one of his own? Seniors should not flaunt the law or good manners just because they are elders, laws apply to every age group, and everyone needs to abide by the rules of the land.
