I had roommates who were studying Law, Engineering and Nursing and at some point during our stay together, they made remarks that insinuated my course was as easy as it sounded.
Each time my roommates were reading till day break (tdb), I was the only one who retired to bed after a few hours and they would attribute it to my course of study. My friend often wondered how I managed to fill JAMB form and chose English as my first choice. To her, I was just plain stupid for making such decision.
I learned early that the only remedy to prevent sleep that worked for me while studying for exams was to keep an interesting novel handy which I read to ward off sleep and return to my books once I felt alert. My roommates would always say; " that's because you are studying English." To them, what it entailed was the study of noun and other parts of speech. My explanation that English was much more failed to broaden their narrowed perception.
The International Oil Companies (IOC's) didn't help matters as well. Each time there was an opening for scholarships, only those in the sciences, social sciences were eligible to apply. The only department in Arts and Humanities that was permitted to apply was Mass Communication.
I never got the opportunity to apply for any of these scholarships because of my course of study. I felt at a disadvantage.
Even in the labour market, there seem to be more job openings for professionals in their various fields than those who studied non-professional courses.
No mind them Stella, the narrative is changing now. Who professional courses help nowadays, na who u know is the best course now.

It's either the person had a very good grade, came in as an intern or is connected.
Deleteread english too and i work in a bank and im climbing the ladder in this industry i find myself, the sector doesnt really consider course of study but prompt and steady deliverables

DeleteYeah sometimes it's not about what you read but reading a course that would make you employable in the real world is advisable.
ReplyDeleteI regret not studying a professional course o. Engineering for help my career well well. The job I am doing now is engineering related and most times its my experience that helps. I have added professional qualifications and an additional degree but it would have been much easier if I had studied engineering . If you must study a non professional course abeg try to graduate with a minimum of 2.1. Don't mind people telling you what you studied and graduated with doesnt matter. That's a big fat lie. Except you want to remain a bank teller for 15 years. When it's time for promotion or internal vacancies it's little things like what you studied or grade that might set you apart.Or you would be doing a job for 10 years and they would just bring one youngie with zero experience as your supervisor because he has an MBA. Study o, make u no dey talk"do you know how long I have worked here?" for another man company!

Please study a good course or come out with a good grade. I studied Geo and Regional Planning and I worked hard to make sure I came out with a 2:1 ...Upon that I still had to go trainings on social and digital media marketing, Web Development and recently finished my Advance Diploma in Information Technology program.. The next thing on my schedule is to learn GIS...I just finished serving, please SDK bvs, if there is any job opening that you think I'm okay for, I don't mind applying. I am hardworking, can multi task and work under pressure. Please Stella post..I really need a job. I have worked really hard for this degree. One day, I would send in my chronicles.
