    6. Yemi7up nothing wrong in using bicarbonate of soda in ewedu or meat or beans to soften it. The Kaun you people know and use in ewedu is just potassium bicarbonate (K2CO3) while bicarbonate of soda is Sodium bicarbonate ( Na2CO3). The only difference is the potassium in one and the sodium in the other.

  4. Thank God I don't eat out. Food business makes me sceptical since it's main motive is profit. I have always felt vendors would do anything to cut costs at the detriment of customers. Maggie is constantly used though it has sodium glutamate that kills brain cells. So many reasons why its scary to eat out.

    4. That is a BIG misconception. Sodium glutamate is safe for human consumption. It has been certified not to be of toxological concern for humans.

The parent glutamic acid occurs naturally in lots of fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes and grapes.

Please speak only facts and not hearsay to cause panic.

    5. @Anon 11:06!...Monosodium glutamate(sodium glutamate) gives me headaches.
It is found in all processed foods,Asia meals and most food seasonings .I stay away from them.
I tend to use more Spices, make my own meat, chicken & Vegetable Broth, use fresh herbs, Soy sauce, Liquid Aminos(I go for Bragg), Liquid Smoke, and Locust bean.

    6. All Condiments contains Monosodium Glutamates and it doesn’t eat your cells out, Chinese eats pure Monosodium Glutamates like Vedan, Ajinomoto etc
Monosodium glutamate, also known as sodium glutamate, is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, one of the most abundant naturally occurring non-essential amino acids. Glutamic acid is found naturally in tomatoes, grapes, cheese, mushrooms and other foods

    7. Thanks Elizabeth. Nothing wrong with Maggi. The monosodium glutamate in it is minimal.

    8. Elizabeth bathory I am not speaking from hearsay. You don't me neither do you know my profession, do you? As we grow older we lose our brain cells and this happens with age. I repeat too much of monosodium glutamate aids that process and we should learn to cut out on areas we can like I do when i avoid consuming seasoning cubes.Your counter arguments only supports what I have been trying to say all along. When you know all these foods you listed have the chemical compound sshouldn't you try your best to limit your intake? Some people who have an open blood brain barrier which doesn't safeguard the brain pathway well enough and allows excessive glutamate seeps through than it is necessary during the excitatory phase of neurotransmitters transportation would definitely experience most of the negative symptoms associated with it. As you can see when not consumed in minimal quantity One of the negative symptoms is migraine, not to talk about other mental issues.

I am not saying avoid glutamate all your life because you can't but if you so wish, try your best to minimise any where you can, it exist too in chocolates which I eat and love, but maggi no, I will pass.

Posh midwife, you did the right thing by avoid it. You have an opened blood brain barrier that's why and you can't consume as much as those with closed ones.

      Delete
    9. Anon 13:03 you should try to reduce your intake for almost all foods has glutamate. Not too much and not too little. Watch your intake considering that it is in almost all our foods, Taking maggi out of my meals and other ways is how I am curbing that and other health problems that could arise from what we eat.

Truth, you can use cryfish or locust beans. Create your own healthy sauce with herbs, honey spices and all. You can make varieties also with fruits. After all the glutamates in those ones are naturally occurring not modifies like that of maggi which molecules are free and not bonded hence they get int your blood stream within the speed of lightening.

    2. There is huge difference between swallowing/taking paracetamol and cooking paracetamol.. Putting paracetamol into food has very serious health implications. When the drug is used for cooking, it is hydrolyzed (broken down) into 4-aminophenol, which is highly toxic to the kidney.

Also, high consumption of analgesics over many years is a well-known cause of kidney damage.

Here is the full message, read it.

Death by installments: How thousands Nigerians risk death consuming meat cooked with paracetamol.

For many households and restaurants, using paracetamol is the fastest way to prepare meat. It saves gas, kerosene or firewood. And costs much less, N50 for one sachet of 12 tablets, and each tablet can cause a pot-full of meat to cook soft within few minutes. It's an amazing discovery, or so it seems. But what they don't know is that as much as they are quickening the amount of time it takes to cook, they are also quickening their days on mother earth.

"It's a lot faster to boil meat with paracetamol," a young mother, Adeola told this writer upon inquiry. "I have used it to cook cow leg on a number of occasions. If you add one tablet, the meat will melt and become soft in just ten minutes."

But Adeola is endangering her life and those of her young children. She was in shock to realise this.

Paracetamol, ordinarily, is a killer, when consumed regularly to cure a headache or take care of pains, but when cooked in a pot, it's a certain expressway to kidney or liver failure.

Medical experts say when paracetamol is used in cooking, it loses the pain killer property and becomes highly acidic and dangerous for human consumption.

When the process occurs, paracetamol is hydrolyzed into what is called 4-aminophenol, which, experts say, is highly very toxic to the kidney and liver.

Last week, a facebook user raised alarm about the prevailing use paracetamol to cook goat meat 'pepper soup' in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State and other surrounding areas.

Investigations by this writer revealed that restaurant owners opt for paracetamol because it helps them save cost and reduce the waiting time for customers.

Recently, there has been a hike in the number of young Nigerian men coming down with kidney failure, most of which result in death on account of poor medical care, part of the reason for that, apparently is consumption of paracetamol/panadol 'pepper soup' or meat it is used to prepare generally. Ignorance is proving costly in this regard.

In its 2016 report, the Nigeria Medical Journal noted that Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has so prevalent in the country that it has "become a public health problem in Nigeria."

In March last year, the Nigerian Association of Nephrology (NAN) said a whooping 25 million Nigerians, representing over 13 percent of the country's estimated 180million people had kidney failures.

But paracetamol or panadol is not dangerous only when cooked in a pot. Regular intake or slight overdose can be equally deadly.

The maximum 24-hour dose of paracetamol is 4g, but as little as 5g, experts say, can cause liver complications, and it can be easy to overdose accidentally by taking more than one product containing it at the same time.

Considered an effective pain reliever, paracetamol is widely used in Nigeria and elsewhere, it's the number option for cure of headaches and easily the most commonly used drug in the country, if not globally. But its regular use portend danger.

“Continuous use of Paracetamol can cause potentially fatal liver damage. Things get much worse when combined with alcoholic drinks, like origin bitters and in chronic alcoholics or patients with liver damage," noted medical consultant, Dr Maria Alice.

      Delete
    7. “Paracetamol is metabolised primarily in the liver into toxic and non-toxic products. Some final products are inactive, non-toxic, and eventually excreted by the kidneys. However, there is an intermediate product that is toxic and is considered to be responsible for liver problems, like acute liver failure, a killer clinical condition."

But it is not just about the liver and the kidney. In 2013, the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) issued warnings that taking paracetamol can, in some rare instances, cause potentially fatal skin conditions called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis and acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis, which can cause the top layer of skin to become detached.

Paracetamol rose to prominence globally in the 1960s following fears that aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen could cause gastric bleeding, ulcers and other serious side-effects. But it was like running from frying pan to the fire.

In 2011 a professor of rheumatology at Nottingham University UK, Michael Doherty, a published a study looking at almost 900 patients aged 40 and older who took paracetamol, ibuprofen or a combination of both for chronic knee pain. When he compared the participants after 13 weeks, it came as no surprise that one in five on ibuprofen lost the equivalent of a unit of blood through internal bleeding. Surprisingly, he also discovered that the same proportion of those taking paracetamol had same problem.

Scientists at the Edinburgh University found in a recent study that constant use of paracetamol leads to toxicity of the liver. The report released by Dr Leonard Nelson and Dr Pierre Bagnanachi showed that paracetamol-linked liver failures are so severe that the patient almost certainly needs a transplant.

Last year, the FDA reduced the maximum dose of paracetamol (called acetaminophen in the US) in tablets or capsules to 325mg to reduce the risk of accidental overdoses.

The advice therefore is, take less of paracetamol and be mindful of how the meat you eat is prepared.

One tablet for a whole pot of stew or meat. What harm could this do? A lot of people would be eating it. It's not a large dose per person, plus paracetamol is not dangerous, abi? Individuals take up to 6 tablets every other day, some everyday. 🤷
Not saying it's right to cook with paracetamol though. Hearing this for the first time.

I try to cook and not eat out, I don't want to sound tribalistic but the truth is "Some" Yoruba's needs a new orientation, the one they inherited from their parents is wack, this was how the Uhrobo's and Isoko's were using potash in almost all their foods, until they were reeducated on the implications of potash, I think it has lessened somehow....
