NCDC Condition To Be Tested For Coronavirus...

The Nigerian centre for disease control cannot give you a test for Coronavirus even if you exhibit the symptoms....To get tested, you must have visited a high risk Country...

A Lady is almost dying,AND has been calling and she is told, she cannot be tested because she did not visit any high risk Country!....

A BV mailed me with this info...

''Hello Stella, my name is *****, you don't know me but I visit your page frequently. Please I need your help to get the NCDC to do something. I have been having difficulty breathing for more than a week now, I am a nurse so I placed myself on antibiotic but it kept getting worse and I feel sick from time to time too though am not coughing.

The two sides of my lungs keeps paining me and getting worse too. I called NCDC, explained my symptoms to them but they told me since I haven't been to high risk countries, I do not meet the criteria for testing. I went to hospital, was nebulised, given another set of antibiotics and other bunch of medications, I took them but things got worse, in fact that night I didn't sleep a wink, it was as if my airways were shutting off right before my eyes!

It got so bad my husband (also a nurse) gave me a shot of Hydrocortisone but even that didn't help. The following morning I called NCDC once again, and they told me the same story. They said only my doctor can call them if he feels I need to be tested. As am talking to you right now am getting worse and the doctor just wants me to keep coming to the hospital and taking medications that are not working.

I wonder why I need to have traveled to a certain country before I get tested for this deadly virus when there are a lot of unknown cases out there infecting other people. Please help me, my symptoms have been happening for more than a week now, it shouldn't be this difficult to get tested.

Please help me get tested before I get worse''.

*One cannot get tested if they did not travel out?Hellooooo??? Coronavirus has landed Nigeria already!!!

    2. Stella I think for the purpose of this pandemic, a sane doctor or medical or paramedic practioner should write an article on this conovirus.
Why sane? Stella must doctors are doing more harm than good in spreading information for this Coronavirus.
An example, I went to an eatery and this people were using the same gloves to serve every customer. They use the same gloves to collect money, they touch their clothes and machines with this gloves and still use it to dish food. Stella that's insane.Go to hospitals, our so called doctors will go out of the building wearing lab coats and gloves go and buy stuff and come back in then proceed to treat a patient without changing the gloves. Their excuse? Gloves are limited.
It's aseptic measure 101 that gloves are to be changed after every trip. I'm a microbiologist and I know this. Most people will end up self infecting themselves with Coronavirus because of this. If you can't use a glove then learn or be extremely cautious and wash your hands after every trip.
The situation is appalling and we need to address this issue

Kai Nigeria oohh, the only crime one needs to commit to be treated horrible is to be born a Nigerian
Corona virus is in Nigeria already, you don’t need to travel out to have contact with an infected person that got it from traveling out
For crying out loud, those infected people that came back from high risk countries have relatives and friends, their relatives and friends also have their own friends
      Oh God
What of the domestic house helps living with them?
      Who do us?

So all the test kits donated by Jack Ma, Alakija and co
So then greedy set of politicians still hijacked and cornered it for themselves?

      This is saddening

    7. @anno 11:45, gloves and face are limited! Hospitals do not provide gloves for doctors and nurses to work with...so what so you want them to do?, not wear at all? I am a doctor in one of the teaching hospitals in Nigeria, so I know what I am talking about. I had to buy my own pack of face mask and trust my once I exhaust all the 50 pieces in the pack I WILL STOP GOING TO WORK unless I am assured of them I minimum PPE to work with. Even the so called PPE that they said was donated to Nigeria by the Chinese billionaire, we heard they are fairly used, and the Nigerian gov paid for them. We are not ready in this country. I just pray a cure/solution is found for this ASAP...if not Nigerians are in trouble! Nigerian doctors/nurses have being so abused and neglected over the years and are not patriotic enough to fight this...majority will down tools if push comes to shove.

  11. It might not be corona virus as you are thinking. It might be a case of chronic pneumonia.

Please don't panic and don't allow fear to envelope you.

You can visit General or any government hospitals. But I don't understand why they won't test you.
I know someone that was sick of malaria and she was tested for corona virus before commencing any treatment on her.

  17. Stella they are right to do so. Equipments are limited. Most people calling are hypochondriacs as mean as it sounds that's what happens during pandemics. That's why they said when you feel you have contracted *cono* self-isolate for 14 days. This poster is obviously not an elite socks don't expect to be treated as one. Some people are lucky to get tested but if everyone calls the way this poster just called, the number will surprise you and sadly not everyone will still be tested and obvious cases might be missed. There's a protocol and they're keeping to it unless of course you're an elite and you can afford to break protocol otherwise self isolate, drink water, take your vitamins and eat well.

    1. Youre very mad! Anon 11:45, how are they right by refusing her treatment cis she’s not an elite? Does corona know elites or non elites before attacking. 2. Anon 12.29 it's the plain truth. She has traveled abroad so according to her history she's not at risk. She should go to hospital and get her lungs checked out and stop waiting for convid-19 test

    4. Sweetie it's not me it's pandemic protocol. Mr common ignoramus are you aware that in Spain, Italy and US doctors are currently playing God. They choose between old and young, rich and poor who would get priority and receive ventilator. It's not fair that you ain't rich enough or healthy enough or sick but not too sick to be tested for convid-19, it's life. It's pandemic protocol, it's survival of the fittest. This poster should go for a lung scan and stop waiting for ncdc

      Delete
    5. Unfortunately most people don’t like to hear the truth. Even in normal cases they have Triage in the emergency room and cases are seen according to highest risk. Even in the US, everyone with symptoms isn’t being tested, the elites without symptoms are getting tested though.
I hope the nurse in question goes to a teaching hospital and gets basic lung tests done so she can commence treatment, don’t wait on NCDC because their resources are very limited

  18. Make a post about this on twitter and copy the relevant agencies. Take a photo of your friend who is not feeling fine or recorded video and post too.

They won't have a choice but to send her for a test.

Don't listen to what you hear on the phone. Use social media...Facebook...IG AND twitter and copy ndcc and other relevant agencies e.g. WHO handles too.

That's the best way to get them to take action

  19. In summary everyone de your de ooooo.
Then poster, isolate yourself in one room in the house, you will over come.
Treat your self for community acquired pneumonia, buy better antibiotics, leave ampiclox and Amoxicillin.

  20. Thats what theyve been doing...they only test the rich who have travelled out....

    ReplyDelete
  21. Sorry, but You guys are abusing drugs..

Coronavirus is a viral disease cannot be treated with antibiotics, which is for bacterial diseases. Misusing antibiotics will simply cause bacterial resistance to them in your body.

Hydrocortisone actually weakens the immune system and should not be used willy nilly too.

Drink fluids, eat fruits and veggies, get Vit C and build up your immune system to let your body fight this virus. I don't want to recommend Chloroquine because no sure reviews yet but you can try it.

    Be healthy.

  22. I empathize with the poster. This is a very tough time to be sick. I currently have malaria but I am having trouble getting simple antimalarial medication...story for another day.

Poster this us what you should do. Go to your doctor and request for a broad spectrum test. It us expensive but the point is to help you get a diagnosis. If they cannot find anything, then ask your doctor if you may have contracted covid 19.

Here is why NCDC may be turning you away. As of now, there is no single report of community spread of Covid. All cases right now are either direct imports or contacts of direct import. So, the test kits are being prioritized for that. There are limited test kits available and this is not a Nigerian problem...it is a global issue. Even WHO would not give us priority over countries with high cases.

Apart from the test kits, there is also a shortage of projective gear for the people who would handle your samples for testing,Therefore, it makes sense to prioritize the list of people on their contact tracing list over someone who has no direct link to places or people who have been infected. It is unfair but that is the sad reality.

There are a lot of symptoms that would present as COVID 19 and the current anxiety brought on by the entire situation would make a regular cough sound different. Exhaust all options first before towing the covid 19 line.

Finally, testing positive only means you would be taken to a facility where you would 've isolated and put through a series of medication, none of which are guaranteed to cure you.

Rather than lie about your travels which a well intentioned BV mentioned, face your doctor squarely. Let them know that nothing is working for you and you are suspicious. Don't suffer in silence.

Also, anon 11.18, no gov't official was tested 6 times. The person and his staff Shi had been in close contact with him were tested. Read that official release.

These are scary times. But Coronavirus will not be our portion as long as we take the right precautions. Hold on to your faith and stand close to God.

The United States with their top notch health system and co are seeing daily infections in tens of thousands. Before they were able to start testing that effectively it took them 2 weeks and this was after the first 1000 cases were confirmed.

Excellent healthcare system cannot save us. Just excellent hygiene and proper social distancing. Prevention is the cure.

    2. Nice analysis. Of course there are not enough test kits out there and I believe they are wasting it on the politicians. I am upset with the fact that some so called politicians who just had contact with someone who tested positive are being tested too. Why not ask them to isolate and wait out the 14 days too? The Minister of FCT for instance decided to go for a test because she came in contact with someone who tested positive. The process of getting tested should be fair and transparent.

    3. Very well written! It is understandable that we are distrustful of the system but there are protocols that need to be followed. The UK protocol is even worse. Let's not panic, we will pull through

  26. I understand the anxiety she must feel but testing is reserved for those who are at highest risk, if she has not been to a high risk country, she has to have been in direct contact with someone who has been in one of those countries. Her doctor is treating her with antibiotics which must mean she has a bacterial infection and not a viral one. She should stay calm, not every respiratory issue is COVID-19. IF she truly believes she is at risk, she needs to get another doctor to refer her for testing

    ReplyDelete

  28. Its same even here in Dubai, Stella. They will ask you all those questions before deciding if you will be tested. Except you have direct contact with an infected person.
Reason is because the test kit is not surplus and u know the way humans are.
All of a sudden every one with cough wants to get tested.

    ReplyDelete
  29. ....Even in UK, we are not testing every patient. Only patients who are sick enough to need in-hospital admission are getting tested.
If you are having symptoms, but not needing admission, the advice is - SELF-ISOLATE AT HOME HOR 7 DAYS, your household members self isolate for 14 days.

That may change in the coming weeks though.

This virus is something that one can get true touching of surface or exchange of items like money or any other things. The bitter truth is you can secure yourself 100% as it stand now bcs there are many ways in which we are vulnerable to this pandemic. For instance, you can't be using 1 hand glove from morning till evening, u have to change it from time to time and how many Nigerians can afford that plus the hand glove and facial mask is scarce and expensive now.
Pls be mindful of what you wrote and stop making the feel troublesome. All she need from us now is prayers and words of encouragement and not bashing.

Speedy recovery to you ma and don't hesitate to send and update as your condition improve by God grace so that others can learn too.

Go to social medias and make noise it will get to them, or let your hubby take the case to Embelembe Abuja or any other radio station to create awareness bcs if NDDC continue like this many will be affected and before you know it, it will escalate.

  34. This is so wrong. I wonder if we will ever get it right in this country

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm sorry dear Poster but only hyper rich nations like South Korea can afford to test everyone. Even in the US and UK, there are criteria. It is because community spread has been the case in Italy that EU is making some changes. Let me ask some questions:

Have you had an x-ray done? You need to do a sputum culture as well. To say you have pneumonia, you have to clinically prove it and these tests do so. Have a blood test as well. If the results show elevated values for bacterial infections- WBC count, leukocyte count etc, don't worry, you may just be getting the wrong antibiotics and a culture will show the right regimen to treat the infection. It is if the lymphocytes count is elevated that we can consider virus and other more serious diseases.
Also have an ECG done for your heart functions. It would help with diagnosis. Sometimes, cardiac pathologies come hand in hand with shortness of breath. Do you have swelling in your feet? (Pitting edema), are you pale? Do you wake up at night and have to sit up?

While wearing a mask, ask your husband to auscultate you and do the full lung examination so you can know if it is a focal or global problem. If focal, it is unlikely it is COVID-19 and with treating the lungs of an infection, you know it gets worse before getting better because the inflammatory responses would cause a build up of fluid and it takes time for that to recede. If you have any underlying clinical conditions, especially immunological and nephrological ones, let your doctor know so he can join the dots and re-evaluate his decision not to refer.

I wish you complete healing. Please also try not to panic as that has never made anything better. If you're negative for COVID-19, imagine the risk of being taken to an isolation centre with a serious lung condition. The doctor may actually be protecting you. It is well.

  40. As much as we want to all become sentimental about this Coronavirus issue, truth must be told.Even in countries that have the best medical facilities, the policy with Coronavirus is to visit ur primary care doctor first before you contact disease control unless it’s an emergency. If the disease control people take in everybody that calls them just because everyone says they have symptoms, they won’t have any space at the hospitals or enough facilities to take care of the influx. They did they right thing in my opinion.whats happening to this lady might not even have anything to do with Coronavirus.
