Labour Room Drama - 281

OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!....This is what i call a nightmare while awake!

I decided to finally send in my pregnancy and labour room story today as I finally have time to write about it.

It’s going to be a long read,so please stretch back and take your time to read.

I got married 2012 and we(hubby and I) decided to take our time before having kids. One year later I got pregnant and from then on,my life changed.

My father in-law is a WORLD RENOWNED OBSTETRICIAN AND GYNECOLOGIST,(notice the emphasis i'm making here),he is a man that is associated with helping women with fertility issues all around the world.

I had a plum job when I fell pregnant but after three weeks of knowing I was pregnant I fell sick and couldn’t work anymore.

My husband had a very demanding job and was unable to take care of me and so the most logical thing to do was to take me to his father. My in-laws lived in a different state from ours and so we travelled down there.

Stella that was where i was diagnosed as having hyperemesis gravidarum( a severe type of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy). I couldn’t keep anything in me, I lost so much weight at one point I weighed 47kg when I was five months gone.

My father in-law really tried for me with his staff but at one point he said that in over 40 years of his medical career he had never seen a case like mine. My mom and mom in-law became prayer warriors overnight, lol.

I couldn’t cope without being on intravenous continuously.Once you remove the drip,I will collapse. My father in-law thought maybe I was carrying multiple babies,I did scan and we found just one baby. I had severe malaria, typhoid ,toothache, heartburn, diarrhea etc. I was a really bad case, my hubby was always on the road traveling to see me,meanwhile I didn’t want to be with him in the same space,at one point I even felt suicidal .

I was also placed on counseling too. I was so sick until the day I finally delivered.

DELIVERY DAY

My water broke one night while I was gisting with my mum. By this time I was back in my house but my mother came with me. I was rushed to the hospital (owned by a specialist just like my father in-law,he was recommended to me by father in-law as I insisted I wanted to have my baby in my house). After 24 hours I gave birth to my daughter weighing 2.6kg.

I didn’t have too much labour troubles but I had after labour troubles. The doctor didn’t sew me up properly after giving me a tear, I remember vividly that day he was busy gisting with the nurses whilst sewing me up and I was thinking why can’t this man concentrate and do his job. I was sent home after two days and life continued so I thought until I noticed I was unable to control my farts. Instead of my farts coming through my anus ,it was coming from my vagina making so much loud embarrassing noises.

Father-in-law diagnosed me as having RECTAL VAGINA FISTULA. Apart from my fart coming through my vagina, I had poop coming out from there too. This was as a result of not being properly stitched up,there was a gap left behind while stitching was done.

I cried so much that period, I regretted having a baby,I was now diagnosed with postnatal depression. My family had to keep a close watch on me.

I had a repair surgery done two months after I gave birth but guess what, the problem came back one month after. This time I had had enough. I became so moody, withdrawn etc. I used to be a cheerful person but I wasn’t anymore. I forgot to mention that my husband had a double promotion at work a day after I gave birth so he was all over the moon while I was the opposite of him. I made up my mind never to have kids again.

A few months later, I did a second surgery and this time it was successful.

As a result of my terrible pregnancy experience, I was so scared of ever getting pregnant again. I stayed five good years before I was bold enough to take another step. At this time hubby agreed for us to try one last time. Now to get pregnant again became another issue,we kept trying and praying but sometimes in my mind, I was still a bit scared of getting pregnant again.

At a family vacation at Disney world, my brother in-law who was with us with his family prophesied to us that I was going to take in that month, Stella truly speaking oh,as soon as I got back to Nigeria, I found out that I was pregnant.

This time around, everyone was prepared to help me again,I even made plans to have my baby in the abroad this time because of my brother in law( he too is a doctor) but alas my pregnancy woes came back in full force. At this time,my father in-law had retired,he advised me to check myself into the hospital so I could be monitored well.

My daughter suffered too as I was too sick to even take care of her,my hubby took over everything. At about six months gone, I was discharged and sent home, three weeks later or so one morning I woke up to wee and my water broke.

Stella I was exactly 28 weeks that morning, come and see panic that day. Thank goodness my hubby had not gone to work yet,we rushed to the hospital immediately and I was told that the baby was ready to come out. Meanwhile all my abroad plans had to be abandoned oh. Life first. And so the doctors came to us and started counseling us telling us not to be sad in case the baby does not make it.

They were going to perform an emergency c section for me because the baby was breech,so many talk that day eh. As they were still deliberating on what to do with me,( father in-law was on the phone talking to the doctors and every one was running around trying to help),baby turned into the correct position ready to be born. The pediatric doctor asked us to get one drug like that ( I have forgotten the name but we bought it 200k that morning after going through the whole town looking for it), it was meant to be used just in case of any breathing problems.

I went into labour naturally and had my second daughter weighing 1kg. Stella you could carry my child in your palms,I am not exaggerating here please. She was so tiny and was immediately taken away to be kept in an incubator. I was so weak and tired at this point, I could only keep praying in my mind.

My daughter was in the incubator for seven weeks battling for her life.

The pediatric doctors and nurses really tried for us I must say. Do you know after all the stress we went through to purchase that drug, it wasn’t used,I later donated it to the hospital and asked them to use it for any mother who couldn’t afford to buy the drug. My daughter kept battling for her life, she had different episodes eh, I turned to a prayer warrior too. After eight weeks, she was finally discharged, she weighed 1.7kg at this point oh.

There were other premature babies born after her that did not make it but God had mercy on me,I saw mother and fathers crying due to the loss of their babies at the NICU.

To take care of her at home was another stress,we had to be visiting the doctor every two days to check her blood levels,I lost count the number of blood transfusions she had while at the hospital and even when she was discharged.

My mother was a real help to me,I don’t know how I could have coped. Guess what again , same day I gave birth,my husband got another promotion at work,he became a Senior Manager at work even when it was not time for him yet.
As it is now, we have said goodbye to child bearing, I am grateful to God for seeing me through and giving me a supportive family.

Thanks for your time and patience.

I keep telling people having a baby is not child's play. Some have it simple while some have it rough.

  10. Thank God for you, I survived eclampsia and also had to do an emergency c section. My baby weighed 1.5. what we went through that period is better left unsaid. I saw babies die, mothers too who convulsed and died. My existence today and that of my baby girl is nothing short of a miracle. Pregnancy and delivery is just by God's grace, no one should take it for granted

  11. Thank God for your life madam..that was scary, and some people will say pregnancy isn't sickness.
Pregnancy and childbirth isn't easy, it's only God. The thought of going through it again is so scary even though I wish to have a girl but I knew what I passed through.
One mama in my area asked me to try again for a girl so I can go for omugwo,...I just smiled and thanked her for her concern. I'm still nursing my scar biko. The emotional trauma nko...

The hospital staff still use my delivery episode as a case study for 1st time moms.

    3. Hahaha.... my dear Anon 18:28. I don't think theres anything to be worried about. At 9 months pregnant for my 1st people still dint believe i was pregnant. For my 2nd, my brother wedded wen i was 6months gone. I was chief host running up and down and wen i had my baby like months later they were shocked. So not every pregnancy shows. Also i have serious nausea wen pregnant i loose up to 10kg in first trimester alone. In fact i get so slim that's how my Mom knows I'm pregnant. And yet i never throw up. You would be fine. Just take ur meds especially pregnacare or folic acid and blood capsule .then eat fruits nd veggies a lot. My delivery is always easy. My babies dont weigh more than 3kg. God be with u. You would share ur testimony in Jesus Mighty Name Amen
