Mrs Dee's Corner -Romantic Gifts That Are A Turn Off....

Everyone has what they like and what puts them off...

The kind of gifts have always appealed to my emotions are gifts and words of affirmation. They are my default 'mumu button' and if every other means to gain my attention fails, these two have been known to do the trick.

The gifts don't have to be necessarily expensive, but the thought that the giver had me in mind before purchasing the gift is enough to melt my heart.

Whether it's a simple love card, an interesting book or a beautiful bag, I'd always appreciate them.

However, there are some gifts my hubby knows never to gift me. You see that stuffed animal or is it teddy bear, I can never accept such, in fact it creeps me out and (my apologies to teddy bear lovers) I always look at those who love it as weird. I remember how my classmate in school used to cuddle one huge one so tightly while sleeping, in fact, it became a replacement to her boy friend and she would always mumble sweet nothings to it.

Abstract works of art are also in the category of gifts I hate. Those paintings that you struggle to understand what the artist had in mind while painting. The ones that add no colour and appear bland on the wall. It's better to leave the wall bare than adorn it with something that looks 'meaningless'

Even though I admire flowers from afar, I wouldn't want it to be given to me as a token. Those 'oyibo' movies where the lady 'awws and ohhhs' and gets a glass filled with water to put the flowers are not my thing.

I am a typical Naija woman and Oyibo style of being romantic falls flat for me.

*you must be missing out oooooh...
Being a 'Typical Naija woman' does not mean you have to put yourself in the cupboard....Flowers are beautiful and bring life into an environment...An abstract painting helps your brain relax if you know how to stare at it....

I don't have time to pretend,if the gift you are giving me is not expensive, please forget it..lol

  2. I think teddy is the only turn off for me. Please don't buy for me. I love flowers but something nice should accompany it biko.

I like bags, shoes and perfumes but I don't want anyone aside my family members to buy them for me. They know what I like.

I love flowers but something should follow it biko. I also love anything I can use to decorate my space. Wall frames, flower vase...........

  6. Gifts for me should come from a place of love no matter what it is but for me the perfect gift should be money or Footwear cos it’s like my addiction.

Tomorrow is my birthday but instead of feeling happy I feel all sad. Because I had discovered that it was to fall on a Saturday I already had my plans for the day in my head but Corona just messed things up and I feel terrible.
Doing a retrospect of my life in the last one year and it saddens me to know that I’ve not made so much progress. I feel quite sad but we move.

    1. Anon 12.49, would you rather be gifted stuffed animals and fresh flowers than iPhones and cash gifts? I'd really like to know because, everyone seems to be quick to bash the "naija girl"...

I still don't understand how a teddy bear for kids will now be gifts for adults. No one should try that with me Sha.

  15. My reasonable stance remains;
    * Do you want to have your dignity as a lady and keep it in case the relationship progresses to marriage?
*Do you want peace of mind and blessings?
Then DO NOT receive any gift (except card notes) until he proposes and you accept to marry him.
    🀦🏻‍♀️🀦🏻‍♀️🀦🏻‍♀️🀦🏻‍♀️🀦🏻‍♀️
It is more blessed to give than to receive, says the only wise God.

    1. Anon 13.03, I'm still trying to figure out the way you think! So a male friend can't buy you a gift? Must it be about relationships and marriage? Don't you give out gifts? Does it affect the dignity of the receiver? Also, if someone you're in a relationship with buys you a birthday present are you to reject it?

I am sincerely trying to get your point here...

      Delete
    2. @Mama Mia
Do you know the motives behind all the gifts "male friends" give you?
If you keep receiving, one day, you will be required to give what you
wouldn't like to give at that time. When you give your chastity, you might
receive with it; sti/hiv, demons, "unwanted pregnancy" and abortions, death perhaps and... eternal damnation,
To be safe is to reject those gifts until you have received the giver.

      Delete
    3. @mamamia, anon has a point. You'll be shocked at the people ladies have assumed are just friends whose real intentions had nothing to do with friendship. Even ladies get harassed when they don't receive gifts not to talk of when they do.

  16. The average Nigerian girl has this vain weird "receiver" psyche. If a man says "hello" to her, she is already expecting monies and credit alerts to
be given. It not due to poverty, it is a greed mentality.
And those stuffed whatever that the whisper "nonsense" to is nothing but an idol. If you see where a girl was crying that it was stolen, you will think that
she is bereaved. If you cannot do without it, it is your "god". For "a person is a slave to whatever masters that person".

    ReplyDelete
  17. πŸ‘™ I will reject these, especially if it's from someone I do not have feelings for.I prefer to be gifted cloth(it doesn't matter if the cloth is not expensive as long as it's gifted with love) and money.

A colleague once told me she bought a set of pot for her then boyfriend on Valentine’s Day 😯
The little things matter the most to me but flowers is a no for me.

  25. I honestly don't mind flowers or teddy bears. I've never been given a gift by a boyfriend before, not even money. I'm in my 30s, have only dated two guys at different times and haven't had a boyfriend in over five years. Really sad come to think of it. It is well.

  26. I love when the gifts show that the person is conscious of what I like no matter how small... Just a gift that is personal, not just something that everyone likes.. You should know I love my novels, so a good crime novel, chocolates, a nice bag or shoe, bangles and earrings(give me something not everyone would know to give me)

  27. I love flowers but back it up with something expensive like a luxury wristwatch or luxury bag.

  29. Flowers are cool...but I wouldn't want them
Teddy is so perfect.. I llloovvee them or usually art work- drawing...portrait..all of them
    Undies are cool..but...anything I wear..I am usually skeptical...before I will see boxers-pant as gift
The most important thing is, you are doing it because its from your bottomless heart....lol

  30. I don't want flowers abeg, give me perfumes, watch, shoes, bags,I no dey forbid am biko

  31. OMG y'all are so square! I LOVE flowers- only real ones though- and it's a really romanic gesture to gift them to me. I like plants too.

Abstract art is also beautiful, the right one would give your space a modern chic aesthetic if that's something you're into.

I don't knock any kind of gift sha as long as it's thoughtful, useful and well made.

No matter how ridiculous it might seem to others.
I also make conscious effort to use what is gifted to me.
It is the thought of it that matters.

  33. I love flowers but they have to be the right sort. Not the tacky roses with gypsophilia in cheap cellophane rubbish. In the absence of flowers, a great book will do.
