EX President Obasanjo Says Nigeria Will Not Make Any Progress If It Is Not Restructured

Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo says Nigeria will not make any progress if the country is not restructured.

Obasanjo, who spoke on Friday at the year’s edition of the Sobo Sowemimo annual lecture organised by Abeokuta Club, said insecurity is one issue common to all regions and no part of the country can claim to be safe from the menace.

He said the way forward is restructuring, saying without that, Nigeria will remain “insecure, unprogressive, stagnated and, at worst, disintegrate”.

“Let me lay more emphasis on the issue of security, which in itself is serious enough to make restructuring imperative. The south-west governors cried out and devised Amotekun as a solution or part-solution,” Obasanjo said.

“We have yet to see how successfully that will be operated. Other zones are clamouring for a solution because in no state and in no geopolitical zone is life and property safe and secure.

“Criminality is the order of the day. And it cuts across the entire nation. Insecurity is one issue of commonality among Nigerians, no matter their tribe, language, religion, geographical location, gender, age or social position.

“I leave out economy which is in the doldrums and fighting corruption where you see more heat than light and which is festering like a bad sore.

“That, to me, is what reform of federating units and restructuring is all about and not about break-up or disintegration.

“I remain firmly convinced that without reform of federating units, as I will like to satisfy those who may not like the word ‘restructuring’, Nigeria will remain insecure, unstable, non-progressive and stagnated at best or disintegrated at the worst.”

    1. don't think OBJ genuinely gave this lecture, because the former president had solid good eight years in office to change things. Ogun state is one of the worst states in Nigeria. Till today you can't even tell Nigerians what your administration do with $16billion for electricity, the billions of naira meant for ID cards etc. With due respect OBJ, you are also responsible for the insecurity in Nigeria.

  2. Even though I'm not in support of the present government, it's easy for OBJ to talk about restructuring. Why didn't he restructure when he was president..

    1. Despite obasanjo's weaknesses of which every individual has a fault line including me. I see obasanjo as the conscience of Nigeria. At least obasanjo always speak out from the wealth of his experience in power and out of power. Obasanjo had admitted in an interview that there were things he got wrongly during his time as president of which he would have done differently. Of course, obasanjo haven been in prison for whatever political reason came out , dusted and given to Nigeria as an option. He was mkted to Nigerians and most Nigerians accepted except his Yoruba people that opted for falae for whatever reason. Obasanjo has turn out to be a gem from Africa. He doesn't know it all and had the mental capacity to identify, assemble the best brains in his cabinet especially during his second term. It takes a guru to identify raw deal. Place him side by side with what we have now, can Nigerians especially my Yoruba neighbors claim that they acted wisely by midwifying this wreckage we have now as govt in power? Buhari has never seen himself beyond his Fulani stock. He had never advocatd for pan Nigerian interest save his idiosyncrasies for sharia n sharia related causes. He believed that Muslim population in the north was enough to make him president hence the provocative advocacy of sharia Muslim domination. I never heard him comment on economy nor sukurity of Nigeria as he would call it. Obasanjo was framed up for coup d'tat under abacha regime in 1995 in which buhari was under abacha's employment and he was imprisoned for that. It took the visit of pope John Paul 11 visit on April 5th in 1998 for obasanjo to regain his freedom as a political detainee. For 36 yrs yrs after buhari was toppled, no seminar attended. No University invited him for convocation lecture. At any time he finds himself in public podium, he would always talk of sharia and Islam. What a coward of a president.

  8. OBJ had 8 solid years to do this but chose not to. Now you are advising someone else who will not hear. If you have done it, the advice will not be necessary.

  9. They are always beaming with great ideas before they're elected and after they had completed their tenure.

But once in power, they lose all good senses!

Like a fellow BV rightly greeted you Baba OBJ, Good morning this evening sir!
