    1. He is making sense but there is another aspect to his theory. A particular specie, family, kin, are familiar with a particular trait... its general in life. It could be their characteristics. so asking your state of origin is to give the person a mindset or idea on where u are coming from and how u will behave.. its based on the generalization theory of life✌️✌️✌️✌️

    2. Nigerians are one of the most TRIBALISTIC people ever. Even from the top. They won't give deserving appointments and jobs based on merit but to undeserving blockheads based on state of origin. That's the reason for retrogression. Once in a state where the Chief judge retired, the next in line was from the neighbouring state but had worked all her life here since before the states were divided. Time for her to take over. They dug out her state of origin and protested till the governor gave in and appointed her junior. And they want God's blessing

I hate it when people want to know the state you are from 1st before any other thing.

My bff is so tribalistic that she even write it on Facebook, it scares me, not only that including religion, she is a catholic but hate others so much. I really tire for her

    4. Like people won’t know where you come from just by your name. Where I come from regardless of the different states of origin we have, we are one and speak with one voice. State of origin to us is just geographical to us, we see ourselves as the same.

    6. The only way that can happen is if Nigeria divides, after so many years trying to live together it looks like the only solution, otherwise generation after generation will keep suffering under the umbrella Nigeria

    7. It just seems like the people who practice tribalism are the ones who complain about it the most and call it a Nigerian thing. I think each tribe should sort out their issues and stop bringing other tribes that don’t practice this into it by saying “Nigerians”
It’s not fair to those who don’t practice certain things. Be specific because it doesn’t apply to all Nigerians and all tribes.

      Unfortunately, it is a deep-rooted problem. ☹️☹️☹️

  4. Gideon Okeke is such a talented, intelligent underated actor.

The idea of people always asking each other which state, local government and even the village they are from is part of the reason tribalism/discrimination will never stop in Nigeria.

As far as you're a Nigerian and a good person, that is all I care about.

  6. Seconded. Alot of racism, sexism, hate, and violence is embedded in religion which overtime has streamed into cultures. At the end of the day, the change starts with you and i. We are one.

  10. People are different cause of their tribe and upbringing so sometimes its good to knw where the state of originso as to knw their culture and accepted dos and dont and how the person tends to think concerning a particular concept

  11. Tribalism will never end in this country, even amongst state, their still discrimination. Let's learn how to live with it and tolerate each other.

  12. I support what he's said. I don't see why one's state of origin should even apply in the scheme of things. The celebration of independence is to remind us that we were oppressed once but we overcame. I don't support that one he's saying

  13. I totally agree with him, but there are also so many people that are illiterates that feel comfortable with their own kin. I have seen it and heard it alot! I don't understand what tribe or state has to do with applying for a job or even making friends. I make a decision based on the person and not on tribe. Sad thing is that when Nigerians travel abroad that is when we see each other as Nigerians not state of origin.

  15. While Gideon’s suggestion may seem reasonable in a reasonable setting, it is almost dangerous in this particular setting of ours—Nigeria. Is he completely ignorant of the absolute rubbishing of our country by a particular sect of people, the Fulani, in spite of laid down laws to promote federal character. Is his federal character a situation currently on ground where without much grudging every other tribe in Nigeria now fully accepts that their own people being massacred like cattle are second class citizens in this country. Is his own federal character accepting that a female student in Yobe is allowed a pass mark of 7 or 11, a male is allowed 2 and most other states, of the southern extraction must get marks mostly above 100 in the same exam as students in Yobe to qualify that they have pass marks? Oga please face your acting drama and don’t talk nonsense until you are able to address basic issues in our flawed federal character. God bless.

    1. Furthermore, this is a parallel to the white/black/minorities battle that is still raging on centuries later in the US/UK... Why are will still protesting for black lives? Do you think the current underlying systemic Fulani supremacy will suddenly disappear if a non-Fulani is President? The simple issue of the disparity in pass marks I mentioned has been in place for decades and yet no one has succeeded in changing it? You think even if we changed it tomorrow, things will suddenly change. We do not understand that the damage has been done, continues to grow and will take centuries to undo? We take as a mere joke the fact that a group of the poorest minds rule over the entire nation and its resources because they’re from a particular sect. At least, it will be fair to say that half of the white people in positions of authority got there by actual merit not withstanding that the system benefits them. Can the Fulani sect say so of half of its leaders foisted on Nigeria?

The responses to Gideon’s call are equally disturbing and yet illustrate how far blind we are, how the Fulani know this and how bleak the future will remain for many Nigerians

    2. You don't have to insult him to state you opinion, if your opinion differs state it intelligently. No need for face your acting comment. He has raised a good topic of discussion. Should state of origin be really be scrapped NO. But what should be encouraged is true Nationalism that every citizen of Nigeria sees them selves as a citizen of the country first before having a state. Intellect over Federal character, if these intellects see themselves as Nigerians first their aim would be to make their country great not their tribes man or village or state great. Their aim would be to build their country. When America was developing did they say because you are from Georgia or Massachusettes so I will give you a higher post even if you arent qualified intellectually. State of Origin is important not for Job applications but for statistical purposes and also just so you know your roots(Village, Language etc.)
If I am president I will ban the speaking of native languages in office settings. If you are in any sort of office setting the lingua Franca should be the only language spoken. Speaking language leads to gossip and nepotism.
When you go home you can speak, in social gatherings speak, in every aspect bask in the glory of your native customs and traditions. But this should end at the office gate.
      Encourage intellect and Nationalism .
Nigeria national orientation agency is waste of ministry in Nigeria.
As I said sha I am no longer a Nigerian, I am tired.

    6. Hello Y, I’m the anon 1 and 2... I stand firmly by what I said which is that Gideon’s stance is extremely dangerous in the Nigerian context. I am both Nigerian and American. America is built on federal character that is why if you mention Massachusetts you think great tertiary institutions, if you say New York, you talk about banking, Maine and Connecticut, great sea farming and oil and that’s just the north east corridor. Each of the US’s 50 states is truly its own entity with its own laws and its own strengths. Can you say that for Nigeria? We’re trying to develop federal character for a nation of a host of ethnic groups along six geo regions and we can’t even do that. Again, I say, do you know the damage that we are facing? Can you see a man from Texas laying claim to the monetary institutions that have been built in NY? Will a man from Delaware (state for ease of patents and business set ups) sit in Delaware and demand portions of interest in the oil wells of Texas without even residing and doing business there? Now how do we explain that more than 90% of the oil wells which happen to provide the greatest source of revenue for Nigeria and found in one tiny portion of the country belong to one sect of Nigerians, the Fulani? How do you explain this despite federal character in our constitution? How do you explain that you are more likely to have a man from Yobe who only was required to pass 2marks heading a govt office, while Mr X from another state with a score 50 times greater than Mr Yobe will most likely never reach top management. The groundwork has already been set. Even the most educated Fulanis constantly and consistently rub it in our faces that they will never treat us as equals. Do you need to be referred to Messrs El Rufai, Ganduje, Kwakwanso. To then even dream of scrapping what should actually hold these people accountable...do you think when it is scrapped they will look at you and I and reason sensibly? Look at what is going on around us. A group of people are demanding your lands for their cattle. The spokesman said on live TV that you should rather save yourself and give up your land. And yet we have federal character.

I apologize that I said Gideon stick to acting but I mean it. His words are dangerous. I can’t say it any other way and it actually rubbed me the wrong way because I’m very much aware how that will backfire on us.

    7. A person of influence/position or with such a great audience cannot just open their mouths and say anything without wisdom. These times are not the ones to talk carelessly. Okay. Let’s scrap state of origin and see what happens to Nigeria. That is when we will really know one Nigeria

      Delete
    8. Anon 16:43 the self acclaimed wise one. who in your opinion should raise this discuss since you think Gideon does not have the credentials to. State your half-wise opinion without insulting others. You are not an authority on national discuss.

      Delete
    9. I don't see his statement as careless. Because if I am to go by what you wrote then it is better Nigeria scatter na. Because you are referring to true Federalism. That can never happen in Nigeria because as you said the Fulani's and other political elites would never agree to that. Well as I always say I will be leaving Nigeria, as you have stated you are Nigerians American so you have two options therefore congrats to you. Me sef I want two options so pray for me. Thank You and God bless.
But also what is now the solution? How do you work on tribal and state influences on decision making in Nigeria. Because if I look at Gideon's comment I think he is also critising the Federal character problem. The so called Federal character isn't useful in Nigeria anymore as one sect gains dominance anytime that tribe is at the helm of affairs.

    10. Also we are saying the same thing, yes each state has what they are known for and have developed themselves in that regard with them being mini country's of their own, but when the elections come do they fight and bicker that I am from New York , it is my turn, I am from New Jersey so I should be president because of regard for federal character? No, it is who is qualified that would be nominated and then run from president regardless of the state of Origin. even if you are from the state of Virgina if you relocate to the state of Chicago nobody will judge you based on your initial state of origin, nobody will say because you are from Z state you cant work in our state, you will work anywhere you want,be given equal opportunity both in your home state and any other state you relocate to. But this isn't the case in Nigeria. every state even if we should practice true Federalism would be skewed within ethnic lines. You will still see 2 people from the same state but different tribes and the tribal sentiments will enter.
As I sha said we should encourage intellect and a sense of proper Nation building over state of origin federal character.

  17. I don’t think what he said is entirely right.
Representing a tribe is not a bad thing. Identifying your tribe isn’t a bad thing. People should be proud of where they come from.
Not everyone is a tribalist so what he should be preaching should be acceptance, not complete banishment.
I read a book, “how Europe underdeveloped Africa” and I got to understand somethings about Africa.... and what we Africans should be fighting for. Trust our tribes should be what makes us unique. It’s not supposed to cause diversity.

  19. LMAO!!! Igbo’s who have refused to develop their ancestral lands are always the most vocal about this. Our state of origins are tied to our histories as a people. We are not the same people and we cannot and can never be one.

You need to learn to respect others and their tribal boundaries that’s all. If we restructure and go back to regional government then it will be more defined. If you are feeling excluded and unwanted in the country because of the LAZINESS of your elders then you have them to blame. Stop disturbing others whose ancestors have worked very hard to ensure they are fine.

I am Lagosian by origin and no I do not want state of origin wiped out. Because of the extreme incompetence of your states and leaders you all run here to overwhelm our resources. We are tired and we want to take control of what our ancestors rightly left us. Go back to your governors and lodge your grievance and stop complaining here.

Of what benefit will a Fulani or Igbo man be to ruling my state? Does he understand my heritage and expectations? Even in America you apply for jobs and you fill out your race. It’s your identity, if you don’t like your identity then you hate yourself and that is your problem.

    1. As expected a stupid person speaks. You clearly haven't been to the east because no other state in the southwest even comes close to small towns there.

Your ancestors did not make Lagos what it is pls stop the foolery.

I don't blame you because your dull mind has benefitted from state of origin nonsense.

Watch out for us because you can never be as great as we are so you are threatened'..
