ShopRite Debunks Viral Rumour That They Are Leaving Nigeria

South Africa's grocery retailer, ShopRite, has debunked the viral story going around that it intends to close shop in Nigeria.

Ini Archibong, the Country Director for Chastex Consult, in a telephone conversation with Vanguard, said: “Shoprite is not leaving Nigeria.

“We have only just opened to Nigerian investors which we have also been talking to just before now. We are not leaving, who leaves over a $30billion investment and close shop? It doesn’t sound right.

“We only just given this opportunity to Nigeria investors to come in and also help drive our expansion plan in Nigeria. So we are not leaving''.

      You don't mind it?

I knew there was an iota of Truth to the rumour.

  12. I didn't believe the report that Nigeria was contributing 11% of their total sales though, that was a red flag that made me skeptical about the authenticity of the story..

    1. That 11% International sales excludes Nigeria, they meant other African countries.

  14. How fake is the news? Only time will tell.

  15. There's an element of truth to the rumour. Remember Mr Price pulled out some months ago. So I wasn't surprised when I read that Shoprite was doing same.

This Press release is purely damage control.

  16. Why won't there be fake news everywhere? When some people will only read headlines or skim through a story without comprehension and jump to conclusion? We have a lot semiillitrates and mediocores with megaphones in Nigeria
