Mrs Dee's Corner -Expensive Luxury Items Some People Buy Without Blinking An Eyelid

Most persons have that one that thing that they are willing to spend a large chunk of their earnings or savings on and it's not just a one-off thing, it's something that they constantly indulge in and the 'high' they get from purchasing these items is enough to compensate for the huge amount spent.

While some are phone and electronic gadgets freaks, subscribing to the websites of popular brands to be updated on their latest models and products and even go ahead to purchase them, others  derive immense pleasure and satisfaction from going on a spending spree when it comes to designer perfumes, bags, shoes, wigs, clothes, time pieces and even home appliances.

It's like an addiction and the only way to scratch the itch is to splurge on the luxury items of their interest. And just like any hard substance, those controlled by these compulsive buying get their satisfaction from just watching the number of items they have been able to accumulate.

I have a big aunty who was unable to save any tangible amount of money after many years of working because her addictions were on expensive shoes and bags. She had them in abundance and even bought some on credit with the promise to pay in installments.

When she realized that she was yet to have strong investments in lands, properties and stocks, she had to sit down, reevaluate and drastically cut off on her bad spending habits.

I've also heard of a distant  family member who changes her home appliances annually. From the cooking pots and pans, to the TV, fridge, blender and furniture.

Once she hears that the latest products have some amazing features like pots that are healthier for cooking and the latest blending machine that  can blend the hardest grains and nuts in the shortest minutes possible, she wouldn't rest till they are in her kitchen.

Once in a while , extravagant spendings are necessary to show that it shouldn't be 'all work and no play' . Sometimes 'Jack'  needs to enjoy what's been worked for. But when it becomes obsessive, then it's something to be worried about.

One cannot spend what one does not have abeg...Everyone is not tuned the same way..some people dont care about investments,I mean why invest when you wont live forever? Some of these investments are the reason some households begin to fight each other once the owner passes....
Na person wey get money dey spend am oh...

    1. there's no amount of money I can't spend on a good bag and gold. As long as God keeps providing, even if it's $10k I will buy. I invest and also give to charity and struggling people around me but I treat myself as an incentive to continue to work hard.

    3. @14:05 you and my sister are the same she's so into gold .
I think she inherited that from my mom during the pandemic she decided to weigh some of her gold and surprising the prices had trippled.
      Gold is good investment.

    4. Its jewellery and designer bags for me. I think gold jewellery is still the best because u can always sell when u need money for smthn. When u get tired too,u can carry all, sell and add money to buy new ones.
I know a lady dat sold her jewellery to complete the house she was building when things got tough for dem. Some have even sold to send dere kids abroad for school. With clothes, shoes, hair u can hardly do that.

    5. Anon 14.05. please where do you buy your gold from? I need to get some gold pieces and I don't even know where to go to. I am afraid of being scammed in this port Harcourt. Do you have a dealer or you just go to the gold market to buy?

Nothing wrong in investment and nothing wrong in pampering yourself either if you can afford it.

  6. To me, investments may not necessarily be for you but for your family. At least to have that rest of mind they will be looked after even when u are no more.

That being said, as much as investment is important, it is also important to pamper yourself from time to time. That is the one I'm trying to learn how to do now.

  8. thank God nothing controls me now. i use to be into jewelry till my last gold i bought was stolen. i just wore it only once and boom did not see it again. e pain me cos i buy them also as a way of keeping money and not spending it...in life there must be balance, you cant chop all and refuse to plan for tomorrow at the same time saing all and not chopping while you are here is foolishness. let all things be done in moderation

  9. Hmm, why invest when you will not live forever? Hmm, that person should ensure he/she dies while working. Poverty in old age is the origin of the Black Tax. Thinking like this prevents the build-up and transfer of wealth or income generating assets to future generations, this is what translates into being subservient to the west and the wealthy class, not as individual families but as a people.
Please balance your indulgences with a desire to live comfortable, should you live long.

Na follow come, as a daughter to Ada Nwanyi Obosi, hahaha..

If the glitter is worth it, I purchase, one time. No blinking, Igbos call it "etiokwe, erie okwe". You make the ego igwe, you chop the ego igwe.

My weakness remains shoes and bags though, reason I personally rate people by their feet and hands(timepiece inclusive).

Errm Mrs D that your Aunty that buys any new kitchen ware, I for like be her friend o,hahaha. Love me a classy kitchen.
Cooking made easy is the watchword.

  15. I'm hardly an impulsive buyer and rationalise most times before buying a very expensive item.
I splurge only once in a while, and mostly because I can afford it at that point, not having to spend my livelihood on an item.
The only items I splurge on are phones( because I purchase only once in 2-3 years), and so I try to buy the latest, got a Samsung galaxy s20 recently, then maybe clothes for special occasions.
For those who splurge often, if they can afford it, why not? No be my money👐💰

Anything that makes me go window shopping and I see any item that tickles my fancy, I must buy it if not I'll be restless.

I've had cases where I had to go back the next day because the item would not leave my mind.

  19. You are so right Stella, in as much it is good to save and be prudent with spending, it is very good to take care of yourself and give yourself a treat from time to time.

One of my aunt is obsessed with buying properties, she is forever saving to buy more land, i wish she could splurge on herself more, her younger sister cried one day and begged her to spend the money herself, she is divorced and have no kids, she lost the home she lived in to her ex husband, it was her property, but she put it in her husband's name after they wedded, Bad mistake.

She is such a wonderful person but has really been through a lot, this craze for getting more property is annoying because if any thing happens to her now, her brother's will inherit all those properties, sigh! Wish she would take care of her self more.

    1. Please she needs to treat herself to nice things cos she deserves it .
I always tell my eldest sister that she spends so much money on others but when it's her turn she'd try to rationalise she should or shouldn't buy a luxury item, recently she saw reasons with me and now treats herself to good things of life.

  20. What's considered extravagance to one person is another's normal .
Personally I dont blink when I need to spend my money
My Motto is while I'm making generational wealth , I need to treat myself, life is too short not to live in luxury if you can afford.

  29. I used to spend a lot of money on gold jewellry. I don't regret it as they have appreciated in value. I also saved and acquired properties. Now, most of my money is spent on my children's education. I want to give them the best. Thank God they are all doing well and my first child graduated with a First Class. All glory to God Almighty. I believe in spoiling myself once in a while - quality bags are my latest weakness. Life is for living.

I just felt like splurging and it felt good. But the husband was shocked at the amount i spent and then i asked him to calculate all the ashawo and hotel money he spends yearly and tell me which one is higher. FEM, I didnt hear again.
