Former Nigerian Senate President Ekweremadu Advocates Negotiation With North For Igbos To Have A Shot At 2023 Presidency

A former Deputy President of the Senate, Dr Ike Ekweremadu, has weighed in on calls for ceding the presidential tickets of the major political parties to the South East, saying while it is possible to have a president of Igbo extraction in 2023, the zone must engage the northern part of the country in dialogue.

This was as he tasked the Federal Government on the need to devolve power to the states, saying with the increasing wave of insecurity as well as serious economic challenges, it has become expedient to so do.

Ekweremadu, who still represents Enugu West Senatorial District, gave the advice on Wednesday in Abuja at a book presentation titled: ‘Pitch: Debunking Marketing’s Strongest Myths’, authored by brands strategist, Ikem Okuhu.

According to him, “there is clamour for Igbo presidency today. And I believe it can only be realised if we engage ourselves in conversation with northern Nigeria to buy into our initiative”.

  2. in a normal circumstance, power is suppose to go round north, east, west, south and middle belt but no power must remain in one hand

  3. So we need to beg the north to allow us rule? How stupid is that?! To rule we need to beg the least educated people and the people that add the barest minimum to our society? We need to beg the people with the highest level of poverty in the country? It's sickening I tell you!

  6. Shut up before them stone you again. Negotiate what's their right abi? What's the purpose of Zoning if when its the turn of Igbo's they have to "beg" for it! Keep mute if u hv nothing useful to say. Igbo people have always been short changed and its their own people who usually betrays them with stupid opinions like this. You are not regarded as an Igbo mouthpiece, infact you are not regarded at all. Agbaya

    2. He is explaining the reality of things in Nigeria, you are saying shut up. Believe it or not, this country is run by hausas, it will only take the grace of God to have another tribe represent soon.

    3. 17:34, sure what he saying makes sense but I hope he is not planning to run for presidency?😏

    4. Hausas don’t trust igbos.Today they want to go,tomorrow we want the presidency .The igbos need to first unify itself then have a conversation because the truth is if the Hausas don’t support you,you can’t win. There are 19 states in the north plus the FCT plus their high population,it can’t even happen if you don’t have their support.

    5. thank you 17:34..some people just talk anyhow without facing hard facts. he is not saying beg them. Nepotism rules in this govt and they influence policies and have planted their people in key strategic positions. you think they will just allow igbo people become president like that? 19 northern states with their inflated population from the plenty local govts in each state you want to be president with the sup[port of the yorubas when you people don't support each other? you either take it by war or dialogue. strategy is the game of politics and dialogue does not mean begging. you need allies to win a war

  7. Engage ourselves in conversation with northern Nigeria because na dem get the country?
No wonder dem beat you for Germany that year, you no get sense.

  8. The problem is the Igbos are not trusted because they don’t even trust themselves and are not unified and worst of all is their longtime call for secession so it will be hard for the Hausas to sit on the table with the igbos and negotiate the most coveted presidency.I tell you what,if the igbos unite and bring a consensus candidate(which is very unlikely)and the yorubas bring their candidate and both go head to head, the Hausas will vote for the yoruba 100 times over.I don’t know what can change this narrative for now but I don’t know what the future holds.

  9. The igbos are confused. You say you want to leave today and the next day you want the Presidency.Who will give the control of the nation to a region that wants away?

  10. Who made you a spokesman for Ndi Igbo ?
So as Fulanis see themselves as Kings & king makers you decide to lick their a$$ by BEGGING them for a shot at the presidency for ndi Igbo?
I can see your eyes never clear as you are still their puppet.

  12. But he is right actually.

Most people who are sentimental about anything 'igbo' are refusing to read Nigerian history.

Tinubu knows Nigeria. He understands the dynamics of Nigerian polity.

The north has more catchment area and to become a Nigerian president, you must win the north. If you don't...your chances are low.

The north usually vote unanimously as their people are mostlt uneducated.

The south...and east are more educated and have differing opinions and vote fragmentally.

If you want an igbó presidency, you must be in alliance with the north.

Tinubu did this and started posting Yorubas strategically in position of power on federal level.

There is rarely an igbó at the helms of any major federal parastatal. They are few.

You can't lay hold of power when you don't even have allies at the national cake table.

I love igbós. I have many igbó friends. And I always tell them...you can't win in a country if you fight every tribe.

You can't even win if you try to leave to build Biafra either because the Hausa won't even let you.

The Yorubas are strategic. They want secession too, but are unwilling to waste lives of Yorubas to achieve that aim# so they'd rather form alliance instead. It's called 'being wise'

So....spend next 25yrs. Put your people in strategic leadership positions, then clamour for secession at that time.

After all, you can't complain of being marginalised if you don't form alliance at the table where the cake is being shared.

This is how to win. But no. Some people will still sentimental disagree. God help us all.

    1. no its not but you need the north to win, may be not all of the north, perhaps a part of it. Do the maths yourself, think numbers

    2. Misunderstood is right, in Nigeria, the North is highly needed if you want to win a presidential election.

      Do the maths people!

    3. Misunderstood you are right, they are plenty and fiercely loyal to their own. Sigh!

    4. Definitely not but politics is a game of number and not sentiment or playing pity game.

  16. This is the best thing to do, without negotiating with other tribe, igbo becoming the president is not feasible in this country.
    Democracy is all about number.
