Mrs Dee's Corner - Dealing With An Infection For The First Time....

Anyone who has had an infection knows how horrible and uncomfortable it can be.

If proper and prompt medical care is not taken, it can degenerate, become complicated and the young person who may not really understand what is happening is sometimes left alone to deal with the confusion, fear and withdrawal that comes with it.

I was fifteen when I first had an infection, and knowing how judgmental and overly critical the family I was living with were, I never divulged what was wrong with me because I knew I couldn't handle their false accusations, incessant talks and questioning while making me feel like I had the plague.

I itched terribly and no matter how I scratched, it only worsened the itch.

Naive me thought it would ease with time, so I resorted to waiting it out. I also tried washing the itch away with disinfectant and medicated soap, but there was hardly any relief.

Before long, the non-stop scratching had turned to a sore around my private area and the pain was unbearable.

I had no choice but to secretly visit my mum. I confided in her about the itchiness and she explained in details that I had a toilet infection. She also told me what to do prevent a recurrence.

I was treated and the pain and itching stopped. Since then, I find it very difficult to use a public restroom and I ensure my undies are always sun-dried and ironed.

Ah what you just described sounds like 'Gono'
Well at this one can be treated, some people have been carrying around an infection for years and they have tried everything and it aint going away....some have no cure...

Herpes and genital warts just take up permanent space in your privates and ''go and come''.
If you think you have an infection, please talk to a doctor about it and stop self medicating cos some drugs might work for some and make yours worse off than it was!!!

    2. Thank you Augusta for the answer wey you just knack for me. Ehem, another one again. Aside toilet infection and STDs, is there any other way one can contact infection? Or it's limited to just that two I mentioned.

    3. You can goggle it or ask a medical personnel.... personal hygiene too is important..

    4. Using a wet towel, especially those who don't sun dry theirs but spread it in the bathroom can cause it. Using soap to wash inside the veejay and not changing sanitary towels on time. It will cause itching that can lead to an infection.

  4. I've had vaginal thrush (volvo-vaginal candidiasis) and I was a virgin. It is due to poor hygiene or washing the vagina with soaps. It is NOT sexually transmitted.
Nothing to be ashamed about it. I've had it a couple of times especially after a course of antibiotics to treat UTI or throat infections. The antibiotics changes the vaginal normal bacteria and the fungus grows.
Just inserted over the counter clotrimazole and rubbed the cream, and in 5-7 days, I was done. If you have doubts, see the doctor.
    I've learnt to take the following measures to avoid a recurrence;
*Wash the vaginal area with plenty of water and never wash inside with soap
*change my undies daily and wash them
*Once I start an antibiotics for any other illness, I was after every urination and change like twice daily.
I keep that place holy and clean for my dear husband. 😁😁😁😁

    1. Teejay, Augusta is right. With regards to candidiasis I will also add that ladies should eat natural yoghurt as it has lactobacilli which keeps the vagina healthy and prevents the overgrowth of candida. If the lady has a sexual partner, he should also be treated to prevent reinfection.
Stella, gonorrhea presents differently if it presents at all in women. In men due to their physiology, it presents as pain on urination with or without a pussy discharge. I used to be a sexual health specialist so I know about these things.

  5. Those who are ashamed of visiting the doctors for any infection are those having pre or extramarital sex. A lot of people are coming down with oral warts and gonococcal sore throats due to immorality.

  6. We keep applying caution cos we women are always open to it.🤦

    2. Do you douche in any way? I had this awful smelly discharge after i put to birth for almost 1 year. 11 months to be specific. What test did i not do? What medication didnt i take. I started praying to God because all the tests showed there was no infection. I was so uncomfortable having sex with my husband but it was as if he wasnt perceiving it. Finally God directed me to a doctor and he prescribed Clemarin vaginal inserts for me. I used it for 7 days. By the time i used it by the 3rd night, the odour had gone. I still thank God when i remember how He came through for me. So please try this. I hope it works for you.

    5. The smelly discharge can be caused by so many things so you need to see a proper specialist. If you can, see a Professor of Clinical Microbiology in your teaching hospital. He or she will then take a full history plus vaginal swabs and other tests. Smelly discharge can be due to anything but the infections often overlooked is either Trichomonas vaginalis or Anaerobes. Both are cured by the same medication - Metronidazole.

  9. All of you that suffer from severe UTI especially fungal infection, let me give you a secret treatment you will seldom get from hospitals.
Drink akamu/pap/ogi not custard ooo fresh akamu.
    Principle
Fungi caused UTI (which is more difficult to cure because of its similarity to human cell) is mostly as a result of imbalance in the microbial population of the pubic region. This imbalance may be as a result of antibiotic abuse.
Now akamu is made by a process of fermentation which introduces GIT bacteria (called normal flora) into your steeped, mashed corn. This is why akamu is easy to digest. Apart from digestion, this bacteria present in the akamu will then lead to a mutualistic competition which will also balance the microbial population of your pubic region.
While doing this please remember to keep the infected area clean and dry at all times.

    1. You didn't mention whether it should be taken raw. Because using hot water will likely kill the microbes.

      Delete
    2. Take it raw or with milk sugar and milo. It's job is to facilitate a competitive environment for mainly lactobacillus which happens to be the major Micro-organisms present during fermentation as well as around the vaginal walls. The hot water will Not neccessarily kill the all microbes because we have what is called thetmophilic microbes. Once this akamu gets to the GIT, it creates a highly nutritious environment for microbial activity

    3. Natural yoghurt with lactobacilli is better.

    4. pretty much all naturally fermented foods are good at this

  11. Even the water can cause ringworm on any part of the body. We need to be realistic about these things and not jump to accusing others. When you live in a hot climate with poor source of water, lots of mosquitoes and such then these things will be a reality.

  12. Bacterial and fungal infection causes itching and vaginal discharge. Please see a doctor. Please.

  13. Errmmm Mrs D you said you were 15 and naive but methinks this paragraph messed up your innocent analysis of that underlying problem then.
"...Before long, the non-stop scratching had turned to a sore around my private area and the pain was unbearable..."

Do you mind expatiating because my knowledge of sanitary conditions and women anatomy is querring your post.
I have 2 young girls, age 9 and 11 I want to be sure what I'm forcing down their throats.

    Thanks for your reply.

    1. When an itch, (in this case an infection) is scratched consistently, it becomes sore and before long can turn to a wound. Imagine scratching a mosquito bite non-stop instead of applying a soothing balm to it, it will either become red and swollen and if care is not taken become an open wound.

    2. Thank you Mrs Dee. The constant scratching also means that the yeast/fungus gets under fingernails and you keep reinfecting yourself. I usually advice girls to throw away their underwear during treatment or if they can't afford to boil their underwear to prevent reinfection.

    3. Thanks a lot for the clarification.
      I appreciate.

  14. This sounds like vaginally thrush or candidates. It is very very common. Infact every woman will have it at some point in their live. It is not sexually transmitted. It is caused by an overgrowth of candida, a normal vagina flora. It is not toilet infection... I dont even know what that one means sef. Fluconazole tablet is the drug of choice. There are also creams such as clotrimazole for external application
