Judge Dissolves 11 Year Old Marriage Because Of Infidelity And Insult To Mother In Law

When mother in law and daughter in law begin to insult each other, the Marriage has ended.......

A Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan on Monday dissolved the 11-year-old marriage of a teacher, Mr Yewande Onaola, on grounds of disrespect and infidelity on the part of his wife, Tawakalitu.

Yewande, a resident of Itesiwaju Estate, Ayegun in Ibadan, had told the court that Tawakalitu’s embarrassment of his mother and other immediate family members had become unbearable.

”In 2017, Tawakalitu started by insulting my mother even in her presence without any reason.I had tried to stop her from such disrespect to me and my relatives, but it occurred to me that she derives pleasure in the habit.

“Tawakalitu comes to my school to cause mayhem, thus, embarrassing me and my position. As if these are not enough, I sometimes catch her in a heart-to-heart talk with men of easy virtue. The worst of all is that Tawakalitu has been misguiding our two children against me by telling them to disobey my instructions,”

Responding, Tawakalitu consented to the marriage dissolution but denied most of the allegations against her.

She told the court that her mother-in-law never wished her well.

“Yewande is an unrepentant drunkard, besides being a nag who keeps complaining of minor issues. He is a cheat, he is in a romantic affair with my friend’s maid.I don’t know how I offended his mother, she keeps raining curses on me,” she said.

Tawakalitu added that Yewande poured hot oil on her breasts during an argument.

The Court President, Chief Ademola Odunade, held that the court was duty-bound to put an end to any union that might result in bloodshed.

He said that the court dissolved the union in the interest of peace and granted the custody of the two children produced by the marriage to Tawakalitu.

He ordered Yewande to pay N10,000 monthly to Tawakalitu for the children’s upkeep, adding that he should be responsible for their education and other basic needs.

  6. I put it to this judge that he has erred in the law.
Mother in law is not part of the marriage covenant.
She is an intruder in this marriage and should have been
    the one sanctioned.

  8. Mother's in law can sometimes be overbearing. I pray you Don have a bad one. She will so frustrate uiu n if care isn't taken u end up being droressed. Esan mother's in law should allow to rule couples to live their lives. I had a bitter experience n had to run for my dear life. Very wicked a woman. There was nothing I did that was right whereas her own two daughters are divorced. She is always saying the rosary n praying but her character is zero. I wonder if the rosary alone can take her to heaven. She wants to be the one to cook in our kutchen, she wants to serve the food from the pot for us,imagine o. My ex used to tell me I was nice but ever seen nice the mother started coming we had been having serious problem as they speak their esan language while am Yoruba. I feel when all those start happening and the man doesn't reason well,it's best to leave as one may end up losing one's life in that hell of a marriage

    1. apologies on your experience but be careful about generalizing on Esan people. I am Esan and my wife is yoruba. She gets along very well with my mom, and even prefers having her around compared to her own mom. It has nothing to do with tribe but just personalities.

  10. We Mother in laws should stay in our houses and allow these youung married couples be. Give them time to understand themselves. I’m elderly so I know what I’m talking about. Outsiders are the root cause of problems in marriages and it’s the children that suffer once the home is broken.
