Award Winning Author Chimamanda Adichie Replies Priest Who Verbally Attacked Her At Her Mum's Burial Mass

Nigerian award-winning author Chimamanda Adichie has replied the Catholic Parish Priest who verbally attacked her over comments she made about the Catholic church in Nigeria during her mother's funeral mass.

In a viral video ,she said she left the church angrily over the Parish Priest’s verbal attack and only came back to explain what she said during the interview about the Catholic Church in Nigeria.

Speaking in Igbo dialect, Adichie said the parish priest had several opportunities to express his displeasure over the interview personally but never did.

She recounted how the priest alleged that she said she doesn’t attend Catholic Church in Nigeria because it is all about money.

The author said that what she said in the interview is there are good things about the Catholic Church but she doesn’t like when people are forced to give money.

She also gave an instance where parishioners were locked out of the parish because the parish was holding a fundraising ceremony.

Adichie lost her mother, Mrs Grace Ifeoma Adichie in March.

    2. You are part of the reason Nigeria can not be better. Did you watch the video? Or you just have a certain opinion of her.

    3. You don’t sound well informed unfortunately.
I’m very sure you didn’t read the letter she wrote to the author.
I’m also sure you don’t have any information on this current brouhaha.
But yes, go off with your own opinion.

    8. It's their type that would come out and boldly say," feminists are failed angry women who doesn't like men, who hate marriage because no man wants to marry them but Chimanda their leader IS MARRIED" nye nye! Fa ana akoyeli with authority like Amanda ever told them that she will not get married, that she hates men, that she hates marriage and that she's rude and disrespectful to men. Ngwanu, pay attention to understand what the lady is talking about since you've sworn to remain ignorant about feminism, mbaa o, they will not listen, they will not learn what feminism is but they must open mouth waaaa and trash talk with pride every day all all time. Meru nu onwe unu ebere.

    9. 11:26 & 11:40 I guess you guys would love it when you are cussed out on your mom's funeral... Even if she attacked the Catholic church why do a reprimand during her mom's funeral. Let's learn to be civil...

    10. Chisom, dalu jare. Nigerians making noise about feminism without even opening their dictionary or researching what feminism is. They are always quick to jump on it without even knowing what the matter was, is and will be. I just tire for them.

  2. All church denominations in Nigeria, it's time to introspect and mend the broken trust of the laity and society as a whole.
People are CRYING OUT from heavy burdens. LISTEN & CARE.

Teach and PRACTICE the doctrines of Christ on love, faith, compassion, peace, care, healing, seek and save the lost - it's all about humanity. That sums up CHRISTIANITY.

  3. My condolences dear Adichie

But, the priest should've at least, apologised.
That wouldn't take the title from him.
    No na.

Nowadays, people just voice out things, without thinking how the other person will Feel about it.

  4. I watched the video on Instablog. Chai! I'm so proud of her eh! Her calm demeanor! The way she spoke Igbo, so sweet. Chai! I wish I could speak my language like that. Parish priest thought she would keep quiet. Hahaha!
Nigerian feminist should learn how to give their viewpoints from her. She didn't insult the man at all. She didn't scream. She spoke so calmly. You can't help but root for her.

    1. Same. she was so calm , no insults. Her point was passed across nicely. I have alot of learning to do

    2. I like that fact about her. She speaks it so effortlessly and sweetly. She is also an authority in English language. This is a lesson to ndi Igbo, mostly the ones outside Igbo land. They speak foreign languages to their kids. Who the heck does that? Speak Igbo to them. They can accommodate as much as 14 languages fluently. Speak Igbo to them at home. They should speak English when they get to school. As a parent in Nigeria, consider yourself a failed parent if your child does not speak your language. It's more disgusting if both parents are Igbo. Haba!

    3. Thanks so much about this statements, I read the letter about the journalist that wanted to run her down, my respect for her doubled, no single word to insult her or to trash her. I'm going to look for the video and get an interpreter as i watch..... she's good

    4. Rubbish talk. My mom speaks igbo to us 247 but we never learnt. How is that any fault of hers? Some people grab language faster than others finish

    5. Caesar, it's so easy to say. Are u speaking vernacular to ur own children - and I don't mean once in a while. A lot of ppl will tell u to speak ur indigenous language to ur children but when theirs come along, it's all English, including French.

Anon 14:25, if u guys didn't learn ur language, it's simply because within u, u didn't want to.

  5. Her Opinion, Parish Priest's Opinion, all should accommodate each other and let peace reign. Every religious outfit defending their territory. In all Money is ultimately involved. Ka Chi mezie Okwu🙏🙏🙏

  6. Imagine locking people out during fund raising and I'm sure only the poor ones were locked out. What are they always rasing fund for in Catholic church? Every Sunday ,building offering ,meanwhile the building in question is completed already. Let me not even talk about the sexual perversion of some of the fathers.

  7. I salute your courage chimamanda. Only few Catholic can speak out like you. The Catholic members treat the church like a cult and when evil is perpetuated in it, they keep quiet and let it go. I'm happy Pentecostal churches are speaking out about the evil happening in theirs and it's putting a check on these churches.

Some of their members have been sexually abused by their fathers and they are keeping quiet about it and dying in silence. Some of their parents know too but they will rather keep quiet so as not to bring shame to the church.

    1. Don't talk what you don't know about Catholic church. The church is an open book, everything is open for all to see. Donations in Catholic church are always done willingly, we don't force people to pay tithe. If you don't know jack about Catholic church keep your mouth shut and don't blasphemy

    2. As in eh nobody forces anyone to make donations. Some people just feel bad and pressured when others donate but that's their complex issue. If you have strong character you do what you want no pressure

    3. 11:31 Roman Catholic Church has its own flaws including in money matters and sexual immorality among the clergy just like other denominations.

MANY ARE CALLED BUT, FEW ARE CHOSEN.

Some have gone into the error of Balaam (Revelation 2:14)

Does that mean that all Roman Catholic clerics and those of other churches are not upright? NO!

LET'S STOP THIS MY DENOMINATION IS PERFECT.
If so, the 7 churches in the book of Revelation would not have received a message from The One Who Was and Is and Is To Come. Amen. (Revelations 1, 2, 3)

The truth should be told - the churches in Nigeria need a thorough clean up and a REVIVAL.

Apostle Paul openly rebuked Apostle Peter when he withdrew from eating with the Gentile Christians because certain brethren came to visit from Jerusalem,SO HE WON'T LEAD OTHER PEOPLE ASTRAY. Gal 2:11-16)

Yes, honour servants of God but when they get led away by the flesh, TELL THEM THE TRUTH!

  10. The priest felt he could run his mouth anyhow on Chimanda? Whatever made him think so? Did Amanda lie? Why would he attack her during her mum's burial? But then Amanda, donations, offerings and every other money related things in the Catholic church is a free will donation, nobody forces anyone. No Chimanda slandering is morally right and acceptable.

  11. Anon 11:17 you don't know anything about Catholic Church they don't force anybody to pay anything in the church, People gives cheerfully. And you're accusing some Reverend father's of sexual abuse, bring your evidence. people write lies on internet these days, Tufiakwa!.

  12. I love how she defended herself respectfully.

Why bring such a discussion up at her mum's funeral? That was an insensitive thing to do.

Those of talking trash abt Catholic church, if you see the kind of NOG they are running no others churches with trillion of naira can do that,in my state they have home for old women and men called good (Samaritan home) they have orphanage home for children, they have for the blind, disabilities etc, have you heard of any archbishop or bishop with private jet?and am hearing this for the first time that the Catholic church keep people outside, the priests don't look whether you are rich or poor, talk what you know

    1. You forgot the nuns and monks, the reverend sisters, the seminarians. Those monies are also used to build the parish house were the reverend fathers stay. Plus we don't do the donations every sunday bikonu. Also, the people she said were locked out or something must either be people that are outside waiting for first or second mass to dismiss for them to go inside because nobody is locked out for whatever reason in catholic church. You'd only be sent out of the church if you're indecently dressed.
