Singer Onyeka Onwenu Finds Love Again With Childhood Crush + Recounts Emotionally Abusive Marriage She Walked Away From

Legendary singer, actor, journalist, and author, Onyeka Onwenu bared her heart to host Chude Jideonwo of #WithChude about how she summed up the courage to leave her previous marriage, find love again and restore her relationship with God.

WALKING AWAY FROM AN ABUSIVE MARRIAGE

After years of marital bliss Onyeka’s marriage began to turn sour and abusive. She said that she endured it all out of love for him (her ex-husband) and their children.

In her words, “The marriage was incredible. It was incredibly perfect. He was a very good friend. But sometimes when things happen to people, they change, and instead of taking it out on the people who have caused the problem, it is expedient to take it out on the people closest to you. That happened. Why did I take it for so long? Because I loved him. And I loved my children. And my children loved their father.”

She says she began to realise that love, sometimes, required walking away, especially in an abusive situation like the one she endured.

“You make sacrifices because of the family. But there comes a time when you have to say ‘I’ve done enough of the sacrificing’, and if you really care about your children, you save yourself. Because it could have killed me”, she said.

FINDING LOVE AGAIN WITH AN OLD CRUSH

In spite of all she went through, she didn’t give up on love and revealed that her new heartthrob was a childhood crush with whom she reconnected with after many years...

According to her, “You don’t meet people like him all the time, he’s just very special. The love that I share with this man started when I was 13 years old. But I don’t think we were meant to be together and we went our separate ways. We could have married but I wasn’t ready. And then we lost touch. We met up again somehow - everything happened by serendipity. It’s by chance.”

WHAT HAS KEPT HER GOING DESPITE HER RODEALS

She revealed that her faith in God had prevented her from being held bound by loneliness and depression. Many years later, Onyeka Onwenu remains unapologetic about her spirituality, and she says it will continue to form the bedrock of her future accomplishments.

    1. She's beautiful but a bit too harsh, the day I saw her in an Abuja eatery mumu me rushed to meet and greet her. Before I could approach her she just shushed me and said "don't you come closer"! Did her nose in the air as if she perceived something awful. She killed the vibe of all those who wanted to go close to her. She wasn't even given the supposedly required celebrity/vip services cos of her action that day.

    2. For a man to really accept an Independent woman without abusing her low-key or trying to deem her light, he must be extremely mature emotionally and love her very deeply. If not; forget it!

Sometimes it's childhood crushes that handle such women better. Because they loved her regardless when others (parents) had control of them.

    3. Mejhay, lots of people have one two things to say about how rude and proud she is. Imagine the way a public figure treated an obvious admirer, so bad of her.

    6. Very true, she doesn’t hide that part @all. I was shocked when I noticed it. One guy approached her for a photo shot and called her mummy, she shouted at him that she’s not his mummy. Or was when she ordered food in our hotel, there was a mix up with the fish she ask for either grilled or fried and one was given to her. Madam shouted at everyone in the hotel

Honestly I kept asking,What kept her going? Ibo society,a single lady at her age? Never knew she was once married not to talk of children.
Onyeka is loved and still loved by those who genuinely loves her. Rita Dominic showed me pepper once, ofcos I felt stupid and little by he she behaved towards me,being I love her,did it dim d love I have for her? NOOOOO. I vented for awhile and let it go.

    11. Mehjay, so sorry for your encounter with her. Please always remember she is a human before a celebrity.

People go through so much sometimes in there lives and maybe you met her when she was down.

I admire her courage to let go and move on. She is a strong woman to still be standing.

    12. I used to be very nice and accommodating to people.
But I have recently become more popular due to some projects I'm involved in. I started being nice, as usual. But then I realised many were taking advantage of it and giving me a bad name for not doing their bidding or succumbing to their suggestions.
So I've changed oh! Don't hug or greet me with any phoney names. People call me 'ma' and I remind them of my first name. Others want my number, I decline.
This is how I survive and keep my peace, especially because of what I've been through.
So leave her oh! You never know what people are up to

    14. That 'mummy' thing can be very annoying, sha. Just like calling every woman 'madame', married or not. Anything that alludes to age is not easily welcomed by a lot of women, whatever her actual age or circumstance.

      But dont call me 'mummy'.
      I am not your mummy.

And I'm not taking the responsibilities for that if you think your smart. Loll.

  8. It is good to know when a union becomes abusive and walk away before you loose yourself entirely or die in the process.

  9. Most women choose the people they love, not those that love them, when they inevitably get hurt, they'll now come back to the first option. Congratulations to her

  14. I didn't know Onyeka Onwenu was once married, thought she was just a BabyMama. It's good to read these interviews before one goes and state what one isn't so sure of.

She who fights and runs away gets to be alive to fight another day. That's exactly what she gained from her walking away from the abusive marriage did for her, she was alive to find new love. #Lifelesson

  19. Onyeka is one of those who should be role models to Nigerian young girls & women. I’m sorry she acted standoffish but she earned all she became in Naija. She attended Wellesley College, the same school Hillary Clinton attended before Yale. I used to wonder how far she might have gone had she stayed in the US. Her duet with Sunny Ade was a hit back then, “ if you love me you will wait for me”. I love her and like that she found happiness in life. God bless her.
