·Building Collapse - Lagos Gov Sanwo-Olu Orders LASBCA GM’s Suspension As 14 People Are Confirmed Dead And 9 Rescued

The Lagos State Government is setting up an independent panel to probe the collapse of the 21-storey building on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi. Members of the panel will be drawn from the Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIA), Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) and other professional bodies.

It will independently investigate the remote and immediate causes of the incident and make recommendations on how to prevent future occurrence. The investigation is not part of the internal probe already being conducted by the government.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said the government will surely find out what went wrong and punish those indicted. The Governor, as a first step, has directed that the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Mr. Gbolahan Oki, an architect, be suspended from work immediately. The suspension is indefinite.

More equipment and personnel have been deployed in the site to save more lives.

Nine persons - all men - have been pulled out of the rubble alive. They have been taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, 14 others were brought out dead – as at 2pm.

Mr. Sanwo-Olu thanks all first responders and those who have joined the rescue efforts, including construction giants Julius Berger, Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

A help desk is to be set up at the site for people seeking information about their relations who may have been involved in the incident. The media are hereby notified that the government will be releasing information whenever the need arises to avoid any sensational reporting of the unfortunate incident.

The Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, was today at the site to encourage rescuers and comfort relations of those trapped in the rubble. Dr. Hamzat left the site for the Lagos Island General Hospital to see the survivors.

The government will embark on further foundation and borehole acidic level tests to ascertain the impact on the collapsed building. These tests, particularly the borehole acidic level, is important for the entire Gerrard Road and adjoining areas.

We wish to state that there will be no cover-up in the search for the truth in this incident. If anybody is found to have been indicted, he or she will face the law.

It is important to restate that all developers and property owners are required to adhere strictly to all Building Codes and Planning Regulations to ensure the safety of lives and property. Those who ignore such regulations, breaking seals and defying enforcement, will surely be prosecuted.

  1. The GM likely collected a bribe to approve restarting of the work. If only Nigerians knew the true impact of the day in day out corruption engaged in as a people.

  4. Way to go. The suspension is in order while investigations are ongoing. However, if found culpable, he should be sacked immediately and made to face the wrath of the law.

Also, I can see that we have so many emergency journalists today, copying, editing and pasting. Even when they hear someone say something, without verification, they rush and post and share. Too many versions of this collapse already out there

  5. I overheard someone on Sunday say there's a certain Dr ...... at the Ministry in Lagos who gives building approvals who is very corrupt.
Everyone blames Buhari but the corruption cuts across. You need to see how these civil servants make money. It's really sad that there's no integrity anymore.

We need to cleanse our system and put strong institutions in place and not strong individuals, which is the case at the moment

  6. This is the same way tb Joshua's church ignored the permit for a duplex and constructed extra 3 levels, leading to the daylight murder of over a hundred people hoodwinked into a fatal chase for miracles. After stuffing the hands of government officials and using connections, the investigation was slowed and then silenced with a fake trial. I hope the kingpin of that has murder has more than a conspiracy theory of a flying helicopter to offer those he sent ahead to his new permanent residence.

Today again, there is a promise of transparency from a government that permitted work to continue despite knowing that there were more storeys then were approved. Once party cards are displayed and alerts received, it's unto the next one. Buy and rent these spaces at your own risk.

When it happened at synagogue, bags if rice and wads of cash silenced even blood relatives and an entire nation. Imagine how affordable it would be to get the children of poor labourers to cooperate. In a few weeks, even politicians would be called men of God and prophets once the palliatives begin to flow.

Nigerians will know the standard thing to do, yet they will still cut corners, corners they can't cut abroad, saying sebi nah Niaja nothing dey there jare.
Yet many of us know the world standard, because we studied abroad, but the application of our knowledge in Niaja is war...
Nigerians listen, you can't cheat on everything.
    RIP to the dead.

  8. I've lost count of how many contracts my husband has lost because he refused to compromise. Jobs that can change our finances.
There was one that hurt me badly. He refused to do the job cause the main contractor did not make provision for earthing.
    Too numerous to mention.

  13. All of you buying luxury apartments in high rises in water logged soft soil Lagos. Ikoyi and VI were designed by colonialists as one story buildings because they are closer to not just the ocean but Ikoyi to the lagoon. Marina and broad street were for high rises. There was a reason.

They allegedly were rushing to complete it by December in time for Christmas. The owner allegedly went with it. If we want to live like developed countries, we need to remove corruption. Read Sanwo’s statements and watch all the news? How many equipments and shifts of many workers at the Miami condo collapse vs this one? The video of the owner saying each building was grace, faith, peace is an example of how we apply religion wrongly. Religion did not build the 160 story in Dubai or Willis tower in the US.
Earlier engineers were said to have said the place should not be more than 4 stories. It was approved for much more at $1.2m per apartment. I tell folks here, interior decor imported from Dubai and China is not the building. There is no apartment worth $1m dollars in Nigeria. Google what $1m gets you across America. I just feel sorry for the IT student whose Mom was crying that her daughter was in there, the laborers and artisans and innocent people. There are pics online showing the wife of a has been journalist to the ultra rich, touring the place with the owner and a controversial king. Yet the masses are suffering and these folks will cough out over N1b per unit for their 4th or 5th house? Killing poor people. Mr Sanwoolu, there were no equipments and few rescuers there! Stop devaluing the lives of regular Nigerians. It’s just sad. I will leave my property as is and keep staying in hotels if I visit. The integrity of the buildings is suspect but beyond that there are no real first responders, no equipments in case things go wrong! Imagine if the place was occupied fully! With thousands of people! May God comfort the families of those that died in Jesus Name.
