Nigerian Army Explains Why Female Soldier Who Accepted Corps Members Marriage Proposal Was Detained

The Nigerian army has explained why female soldier who accepted a male corps member’s proposal at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Yikpata, Kwara State, was detained.

Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu said that the female officer violated military laws; by getting involved in a public display of amorous relationship with a paramilitary trainee, a corps member.

The soldier who accepted a ring from a male corps member as captured in a video which went viral days ago, was seen hugging and kissing him after the proposal.

Nwachukwu stated that the female soldier violated the codes of conduct of military personnel when deployed for duty, and her action amounted to taking advantage of her trainee. He also claimed the public would have been outraged and accused the Army of coercion had a male soldier proposed to a female corps member during NYSC parade.

The Nigerian army spokesperson said:

“The female soldier in question violated the following rules of the NA:

“1. Fraternization while on official duty at the NYSC camp. That is, indulging in an amorous relationship with a trainee.

“2. A personnel must have served for three years before he/she can qualify for marriage.

“3. She disobeyed the Armed Forces of Nigeria standing guidelines and directives for the use of Social Media.

“4. Indulging in romance while in uniform.

“5. Her conduct was prejudicial to good order and military discipline.

“All the above, if proven are in violation of extant laws with attendant disciplinary and penal implications.”

Nwachukwu who declined to comment on the likely punishment the female soldier might get, however said “the Nigerian Military like all others, has its disciplinary codes, distinct from that of the general society. Every personnel has voluntarily undertaken to be bound by this code.”

    1. Do they propose to them in the course of their duty and frantically engaged in romantic activities? We’re the make commandants below three years of their service to the military?

    2. Madam ur ignorance is showing, please tuck it in.
Did they marry them right there on the camp? Did they marry them wearing a camo? Please if you don’t know what a camo means or signifies, quit being ignorant and ask those who know or better still read up.

    3. Nice questions anon 11:14.

social media would be the undoing of many,if she had gone private,it wouldn't have gotten this much exposure. The army has to do what it has to do before it becomes a norm. They have rules and regulations and anyone not ready to abide shouldn't go into it.

  5. Despite all the public backlash, I am a female and I am a feminist AND I agree with the steps taken by the army. This was all forms of distasteful and tacky, especially in uniform with another uniformed TRAINEE. Kissing and all that. Just distasteful and highly UNPROFESSIONAL pls.

  8. When I saw the video, I was full of excitement. I embraced the relationship with love. However, going through the rules and regulations of Nigerian Army as regards a situation like this, I would rather appeal to the Nigerian Army authorities to please tender justice with mercy. I recall during a friend's wedding - it was a military colorful wedding. When I approached him to take my cap on his Military uniform, he said, "No, it is against the rules; we don't that in the military".

  13. Is it that she wasn't aware of these rules or what? I hope their love will stand the test of time because she is in for a very tough ride.

  14. She should have known better. Why go against the ethics of your job when you know the consequences. I hope they'll be lenient on her with the punishment.

    1. Why should they be lenient on her, because she is a woman or because she is ignorant of the law?
Believe me, this is the only thing still keeping our military. Their strict rules and the discipline to follow the rules, it’s the only reason why me and you don’t look at them the way we look at police.
