He also directed local government chairmen, especially Port Harcourt City Local Government, to identify such sites and effect his order. He asked the council chairmen and community leaders to identify and report to his office those behind illegal bunkering and crude oil refining sites in their localities for prosecution.
Wike, who gave the order in his 2022 New Year message on Saturday, said the directive stemmed from the failure of the Federal Government and security agencies to rein in those behind illegal oil bunkering and artisanal crude oil refiners in the state.
The governor’s directives were contained in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kelvin Ebiri.
He said, “We have drawn the attention of the Federal Government to this problem and requested for its intervention to stop illegal bunkering and artisanal crude oil refiners, which have been identified as the main sources of the soot pandemic.
“Unfortunately, the Federal Government has remained inexplicably silent over our request and even complicit to a large extent, with the security agencies actively aiding, encouraging and protecting the artisanal refiners to continue with their harmful activities.”
There have been concerns over prevalence of soot, a deep black powdery or flaky substance consisting largely of amorphous carbon, produced by the incomplete burning of organic matter, in some parts of the state. The emission was said to have started in 2016.

ReplyDeleteWho will report naa, when the chairmen are collecting their cut, they pay stipends to the Navy so they can pass products on the water, pay police on the roads. There locations are in the bush, you can only rat them out if you are a disgruntled bunker. If one location is busted, another springs up cos some have been busted before. This thing will not end over night, intact it's not ending anytime soon, na to pray for heavy rain because rain stops their activities.

Police, Navy and youth leaders have their days the cook up Diesel,fuel and kerosene. I know of a Police officer who went to Niger Delta on peace keeping for 1 year he came back to Abuja with 2 cars how? When? All thanks to illegal oil bunkering.

He cared less how much soot the indigenes were licking and dying from, he just wants to become President.

ReplyDeleteI had the same issue, I was coughing so badly and spitting out blackish phlegm. I travelled out of the state for 72hours, and cane back healthy. It was like magic. Cough that I'd taken cough syrup for, yet no way.Just few days away from the pollution and I was healthy again.

ReplyDeleteDear Governor Wike, pls kindly remember civil servants this year - remember them for promotion,for annual increment, for contributing govt counterpart funding in the contributory pension scheme. Let the re-verification exercise which commenced last year culminate into these. The last time civil servants heard the word "promotion" was during Amaechi's tenure. Even the yearly increment has not been heard.
