First Class Graduate Sule Matthew Shot Dead In Anambra State

Sule Matthew, a first-class graduate of Information and Media Studies of Faculty of Communication, Bayero University Kano (BUK) has been shot dead while traveling to Anambra State.

Matthew was killed with other passengers at Ekwulobia one of the largest cities in Anambra State.

A course mate of Mr Mathew who also interned with him at PRNigeria, Salis Manager, as saying that the deceased was billed to participate in the forthcoming orientation programme of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) before his death.

“Sule Matthew was among the first set of students to intern with PRNigeria Centre in Kano in 2019. He lost his father in June, few months to his final examination, and graduated as the overall best student of our Department in August 2021 and was due to enroll for mandatory NYSC programme next week,” Salis said

“He was on a 6-month non-residential fellowship programme that trains, and mentors young citizen activists to push for democratic reforms – Gidan Yanci. He was on his way to Anambra from Abuja when the gunmen attacked their vehicle,” a tear-filled Mr Gambo Ibrahim, a bosom friend of Mr Mathew, who had been living with him right from their Diploma days narrated.

His sister, Jemila disclosed that Mathew traveled with his boss on an ill-fated day along with other passengers including the driver in a private vehicle.

“After waylaying them, the gunmen opened fire on them killing all of them except the driver who escaped. So, when we couldn’t reach him and hear of the incidence, we sent Sule’s picture to the mortuary to confirm if he was among those killed and we got feedback that he was identified among those killed,” she narrated.

“Prior to this sad news, I kept calling him on phone but couldn’t reach him then suddenly we heard this sad news. I am so shocked,” Binta Musawa, Mr Sule’s course mate stated.

Mr Mathew hails from Ayangaba Kogi State. He was co-founder of hostutors.com, a Nigeria social enterprise that focuses on making learning in formal and vocational education accessible and affordable for everyone by connecting all categories of learners with best-fit tutors.

His body is yet to be released at the time of this report from the mortuary at Ekwulobia.

  15. It still would be heartbreaking even if he were not a first class graduate. All lives matter including those of the other passengers. The real problem is why daredevil elements would be so bold as to perpetrate such in a country with police and the armed forces. Nearly everyone and every agency have been compromised. As one honest group is setting out to combat the crime and criminals, another group within is giving the criminals credible Intel on their itinerary and MO. And this isn't the first of such killings either; many have gone same way. What do you expect of a government that has remixed "repentant" terrorists with their armed forces? Nor be juju be dat?

That effigy in Aso rock [and if you don't want to be unfortunate this Sunday morning, don't ask why I insulted "your" president] should ask for international intervention at this point. Sure, it will cost us some serious crude oil as expected but I'd rather have a safer country than more oil. After all, it's the politicians, militants and military that have been stealing the bulk of it with nothing to show for it. Nigeria needs help FAST else...hmmmm

    1. The objective that "effigy" stands for is what we are seeing now. Pains, untimely death, insecurity, stealing from above and below. Yes, that word "effigy" describes him best. He should be called Mr. Gumidge the farm scarecrow.

  18. Pls guys if you can relocate out of Nigeria do so now. That country is getting hotter by the day. Life as no value. It hurts to see this. In a country where things work even if this happens the killers will be apprehended no matter how long most of the time.
