Nollywood actress, Shan George i a recent interview with Chude, revealed that she almost committed suicide some time ago.
“My mum fell ill sometime in 2011. It became so bad and I couldn’t sleep. As if that wasn’t bad enough, my rent had expired. I had to sell some of my cars and jewellery.
“I sold some of my valuables to raise money for my mother’s hospital bills and went back to Calabar.
“They were asking what I was going to be doing. That night, I cried till morning. I thought that was the end for me.”
“When I was suicidal, I was so broke one day. One of my visitors brought this shaving powder and I wanted to put it in water and drink it. I told my mother I was going to kill myself as I was tired and frustrated with everything. Life became tiring for me.”

DeleteHave you been in a state where you sell all you have to cater to the health of a loved one, you have nothing to pay your rent, no one to give you or even lend you because they believe you have, almost becoming homeless and the loved one still dies in the mix?
That's what she went through.
Yes it may be easy for some of us to pull through without being depressed but we should tag it idolatry because all you could take from the story is "she lost her valuables" and not look at the big picture.
Why should you own cars and exotic jewelries when you do not have money for rent; isn't it misplaced priorities?

What if those were bought when she had money and could pay rent? Bad times hit even people who have built their own house. Then they lost it. Not everything happens because of misplaced priorities.

She sold her cars and jewelry to cater to her mum and in the long run ran out of cash and had no money to even pay rent.
If you have had a relative get diagnosed with a terminal illness eg. Cancer and you need to raise money for health bills e.g chemo you won't sound so obtuse.
Even in places where there is health insurance some health bills like chemo are not always covered, you still pay out of pocket and it is stressful.
Learn to be empathic
I see we've all experienced dark times, but if you're strong enough to hold on, theres usually a light at the end of the tunnel.

Alot of obstacles to hit in a country like Nigeria, everything seems to be working directly against your progress.
It's easier to give up on chasing your dreams in a society not committed to a meritocratic system.

ReplyDeleteThis is the level I am in now, life has betrayed me, I have thought of suicide but my kids will suffer, I love this children God gave me, so I have decided to move to the village, they will stop going to school for now while I hustle to get back on my feet again, am tired of begging and complaining, even the person I brought to rent a duplex in my compound ended up renting my house too, now they are pushing us out into the streets, I ran to Human Rights, the one in the police station ooo, they extorted the little I have and didn't do anything, they told me my rent has expired and I don't have case, the higher people paid more and justice shifted to their favour, I will not die but live, I won't even sleep around to raise money like she suggested, I will trust God till the end, y'all should pray for me and my kids, its been bitterly raining on me, this Easter is a bad one for us but God is faithful, I am disorganised but I'll be fine.... Amen
