Actress Idia Aisien Says She Was Criticized For Her Skin Color In Debut Movie ' Nneka The Pretty Serpent'

TV Host and Actor, Idia Aisien sat down with Chude Jideonwo to discuss her debut in acting, relocating to Nigeria and the loss of her dad.

Idia shared her experience playing Nneka in Nneka the pretty serpent - her debut in acting. She shared, “it was an amazing experience. I think it turned me inside out. It felt like I started over in my life, in my thinking and in what I could do as a person.

Mixed reactions she got after the release of the film Nneka the pretty serpent.

“When it first came out in the cinemas, I was a little bit heartbroken by some of the comments that people were leaving. Comments about me not being light-skinned or Ibo, about me destroying what meant something to a lot of Nigerians. Nigerians loved their veteran actors; they love their Nollywood classics.

So, it was something that I just wished people could see how much passion went into it at the time. But, with the international market, and the kind of feedback we are getting, I am getting messages from the Philippines, French Guiana, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, and Los Angeles. I was hurt at first, because Nneka is a fictional character and anyone could bring something different to the character but I don’t think that tribe and skin colour should matter. I mean, Black Panther was Americans pretending like they are in Africa. A lot of people who criticized it (the film- Nneka the pretty serpent), criticized because of the choice of Nneka, which broke my heart.”

“When Nneka came out, some were like, ‘we heard Idia killed it o’. This very famous female said, ‘abeg, I am sure she paid for that job’. She saw me recently and was nice to me. She said she finally watched it, and it was great, but you know when you hear stuff, it's like, ‘do I take the one I heard you say’. or ‘do I take how you feel now that you have watched it’. This is why it is important to give people a chance”, she said.

On relocating to Nigeria

she shared that she doesn’t think moving to Nigeria was a good choice, ‘I am not doing what I came to Nigeria to do. When I came to Nigeria, I was working for a private equity firm in New York. I came here because they were investing in banks across Africa, and at that time they were working with Union Bank. It was a great job, and a great opportunity for me, everything was going well for me in New York. And I came to Nigeria and destiny takes me.” She proceeded to share that the difference in earning power, the stereotypes and labels in Nigeria, and putting her life in the public eye, are her regrets about moving to Nigeria.

On the loss of her dad

“the business show on Arise was my dream job. But something quite terrible happened to me in life and I just wanted a fresh start. I lost my dad, and I just didn’t want to do anything I was currently doing ever again. My dad raised me. The stuff that people say about their mum, that was my dad to me. My dad was my hero. He had a car accident and he died.”

  2. The movie was a waste of time to me but not just because of the choice of Nneka, the storyline was messed up too. You looked like you were more interested in showing off your body more than your acting skills.

Sentiment aside. The Igbo you spoke no gel at all. Same way people were not feeling Peter Okoye as A Yoruba wealthy man’s son because of his strong Igbo accent in shanty town.

The fun of seeing a good movie is seeing characters come to live and for a moment we should be unable to tell the difference between reality and the movie. That’s what I look out for in movies. Nothing concern me and your passion. If you do well, you would receive your accolades. Was generally disappointed.

I don’t know what they were thinking when they casted her.
Bad acting. Trash movie. Total waste of time.

    2. 11:43,I couldn't agree more with you about showing off body parts more than the acting. Some of her outfits were too posh for the kind of humble background she came from in the movie. We should have seen a transition from when she was struggling to when she made money, but I didn't see that,it was same. Her Igbo speaking ability should have been better than that if they had taken time to work on it,her not being Igbo should not be am issue because she is an actor. Its her first,so she will definitely get better with time.

  4. My fellow bloggies, to those thinking of relocating to Nigeria make sure you have investments already where ever you are.
Also have cash for investments in Nigeria because if not you will suffer.
Relocating is not something you just do, it takes years of planning for it to be successful.
Keep your place abroad because full time living in Nigeria is not for the faint hearted.

    1. You are correct. It took years of planning and sacrifices before we broke into naija economy. Finally hit it big in the agricultural sector, that industry is a goldmine if you know what you’re doing and have the capital for it.

    2. You are right @12:44. The Agric sector is lucrative. I and hubby are planning on venturing into piggery when we have enough funds. It is lucrative, pock meat is used for production of many good products

  6. Sentiments aside, the movie was trash.
Let’s be real Idia, you cannot act abeg.
I don’t know why Charles of play won’t leave nollywood classics alone. Haba!

The fact fact that we enjoyed living in bondage doesn’t mean you should go on a remaking of our favorite classics spree.
    Leave it alone beloved.

  8. To be fair
The role didn't fit her. I wish she can do another role instead of that.

I want to see her in more movies. She is very beautiful and I feel she will go far if given the right script.

  9. The problem was the script. It was horrible.
Unfortunately, it was your first role and sets a low rating of your acting skills.
You should choose scripts with better storylines.

  10. Girl, let’s not lie, that role was a bad fit. People were not wrong in their observations. It was cringe fiesta for the 10-15 minutes I tried to watch the movie, couldn’t bear it and finally turned it off. I looove the soundtrack though and have songs from it on replay.

Don’t worry, maybe you’ll find a role better suited for you.

  12. Dear Idia, you don’t know how to act, acting isn’t for you! You did a very poor job executing the character, it was hard to watch , please don’t accept any script again. Thanks
