DeleteSometime last month, I walked into a mechanic garage and told the owner I want to learn the skill. The man looked at me from head to toe and asked, ''You say wetin you want learn?''
ReplyDeleteI told him I want to learn mechanic. He laughed and said to me ''as you dress fine like this, you no go look for better thing learn or go work for office, na mechanic you say you want come learn.
You sure say you go fit learn na abi na something you want come find out.''
When he saw how serious I was, we went into discussion and bargaining. He gave me his price which is 150,000 for six years including drinks, groundnut and garden eggs.
I smiled.
He asked of my age and I told him. He said aahhh, you're almost approaching 40yrs that means you will be forty something after learning.
He asked if that's what I want in life? If I can have the patience for the six years.
I said to him, actually I don't need the six years training. I just need the basic things to learn maybe six months or maximum one year.
I'm learning it not to go into it as a handwork or profession but to have a good knowledge of the most basic things so I can be able to fix my car myself when the need arises.
He said now you're talking. We both smiled.
There will definitely be a time you will have your car break down in a journey without a mechanic in sight and it may be in a danger zone but with some good knowledge of car maintenance and fixing, you may pull through out of it.
I think this is the main reason I took that journey.

Every month Martín’s parents took a trip to see Grandma and came home on the same train the next day. One day the child said to his parents:

Martin was feeling more uneasy with every minute that passed. And now he was scared. He felt cornered and alone. He put his head down, and with tears in his eyes, he remembered his dad had put something in his pocket. Trembling, he searched for what his father had given him. Upon finding the piece of paper he read it:
“Son, I'm in the last train car!"
That's how life is, we must let our kids go. We must let them try new things. But we always like to be in the last car, watching, in case they are afraid or in case they find obstacles and don’t know what to do. We want to be close to them as long as we are still alive.
