The Economic Community of West African States has imposed heavier financial sanctions on the Niger junta and entities supporting them, including the governments of Mali and Burkina Faso. The development came after a diplomatic mission by the African Union, ECOWAS, United Nations and the United States to resolve the political impasse in Niger hit a brick wall on Tuesday as the military junta refused to grant audience to the delegations.


 Two suspected kidnappers have been shot dead in Iwo, Osun State, as a combined security team of police and hunters rescued a herder identified simply as Alhaji Adamu who was abducted in Abase village. It was learnt that Adamu was abducted in the early hours of Tuesday by an 11-man gang that attacked the village.

The Deputy National Women Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Hajara Wanka, has resigned. Wanka made this known on Tuesday in her resignation letter addressed to the acting National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagum.

 President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday in Abuja expressed his resolute commitment to break the vicious cycle of overreliance on borrowing for public spending and the resulting burden of debt servicing it places on the management of Nigeria’s limited government revenues.

 The junta in Niger Republic has named Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, who currently serves as the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) Country Manager for Chad as Prime Minister. The country’s new prime minister formerly served as economy and finance minister.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has constituted the standing committees of the upper legislative chamber. A list of the committee and the chairpersons were released after the Senate confirmed the appointments of President Bola Tinubu’s ministers.

 The Senior Pastor of Fountain of Life Church at Ilupeju in Lagos, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, has died. The church confirmed his demise on its official Facebook page. Odukoya was said to have died on Monday, August 7, in the United States of America (U.S.A). He passed on at the age of 67.

 Striking members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) may call off their two week old strike after a closed door meeting with Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and Principal Officers of the Senate, on Tuesday. Speaking after the meeting, the National President of the association, Dr Emeka Innocent Orji, disclosed that the parley was fruitful.

 The United States of America has warned the Niger junta that America may be pushed to be involved militarily if the country’s military rulers do not return to constitutional order. The US acting Deputy Secretary, Victoria Nuland disclosed this via a teleconference on Tuesday.

Angry mob has set ablaze a suspected thief for allegedly stealing building materials at a new construction site in Ekiugbo community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. It was gathered that the unidentified suspect met his untimely death after he was caught stealing alumaco materials at a new hotel building site in the community.
