The presidential elections held on August 26, 2023, marked a crucial moment in Gabonese politics. The incumbent president, Ali Bongo Ondimba, who had been seeking reelection, was declared the winner according to the official announcement made on August 29.
However, allegations of electoral fraud and irregularities immediately emerged from opposition parties and independent observers, casting a shadow of doubt over the legitimacy of the election results. Albert Ondo Ossa, who came second in the elections, alleged electoral irregularities.
Just two hours before the polls closed, Ondo Ossa denounced "fraud orchestrated by the Bongo camp." He had already claimed victory and urged Bongo to facilitate a peaceful transfer of power based on his own purported vote count. The official election results were announced in the middle of the night on state television without prior notice.
The country was placed under curfew and internet access was cut off throughout the nation, measures implemented by the government to prevent the spread of "false news" and potential "violence."
Since independence from France in 1960, Gabon has underwent several coups and coup attempts, with the last occurring in 2019 against Bongo, who has been President of the country since 2009 following the death of his father, Omar Bongo, who himself was in office since 1967.

ReplyDeleteThis is one coup that is a welcome development. African leaders are all greedy.
DeleteGreedy, selfish, useless and mean
DeleteThis is seriously serious and interestingly interesting
ReplyDeleteWhy run a country like it's your birthright though?
Another coup?
ReplyDeleteAnother Coup again. What is wrong with African leaders? How can you lead a country for 50 years where are you leading them? To the great beyond or what? All African leaders should buck up because this toppling of government will not stop anytime soon. Side eyes at Cameroon πππ
ReplyDeleteE worry oo My sisterπ€·
DeleteExactly side eyes at Cameroon. These African politicians are not trying at all.
DeleteAfrica is on a roll
ReplyDeleteAfrica waking up from slumber long over due. E go reach where e suppose reach - the headquarters!
DeleteLol @ HEADQUARTER.
DeleteA very welcomed development. How can one family be ruling for 50years? Na monarchy abi dem plant una placenta put for that seat
ReplyDeleteI wonder why there have not been a revolution since all these years in these countries where a particular family would be ruling for decades. Why do the citizens of these countries sit back and watch their countries turn into a family business in this 21st century. If they are like the ones ruled by kings and queens, that one is understandable but an alleged democracy turned into a family business is not acceptable.
ReplyDeleteSee Cameroon too. Their president Paul Biya has been ruling for over 40yrs and he is now 90yrs, yet he refused to relinquish the seat. He had used 7 tenures already and now weak with dementia, he wants to die there and transfer to his son.
Mercy, you see that Cameroon, I want the military to chase that old baba out of power and take over, then facilitate a transfer to another democratically elected leader. They should make them change the constitution that a president cannot rule for more than two terms of at most 5yrs each. Warn them that if they disobey, military will take over again. Very greedy and wicked leaders.
DeleteCameroon own is loading...
