"I told them that this sentence,
I'm in hospital
is different from
I'm in THE hospital'.

Serious argument is flying up and down here.

So, I told them that I'll call my lecturer, the GrammarKing, to settle this prolonged argument.

My phone is on speaker, Sir. Everyone is listening."

You know, I'm a public speaking coach by passion and a grammar coach by profession. Teaching English is my favourite pastime! 💪🏾

So, I quickly put my earphones on and proceeded to give Frank and his friends the following explanation.👇

"I'm in hospital" is actually different from "I'm in THE hospital".

In grammar, that's what's referred to as ANARTHROUS NOUNS versus ARTHROUS NOUNS.

Anarthrous nouns are those nouns that don't take the definite article "the".
For example:
I'm in hospital.

On the flip side, arthrous nouns are nouns that co-occur with the definite article.
For example:
I'm in the hospital.

This means, the noun is immediately preceded by "the". In other words, "the" comes just before the noun.

Now, what's the difference between
"I'm in hospital"
AND
"I'm in the hospital"?

I'll tell you.

You use "I'm in hospital" when you're a patient. You're there to get treated.

You say, "I'm in THE hospital" when you probably went to visit/see a patient.

Other nouns in this anarthrous category are: school/college, prison, court, church, etc.

Consider the following usages. 👇

If you’re in THE school/college, you probably went to visit/see your child or ward who's a student.

If someone is in prison, he/she is an inmate.

Nigerian woman don't even have the moral rights to speak against DNA test, or make stup!d threats to their husbands, I mean, for a people that has the 2nd highest rate of paternity fraud in the world,. What happens to shame? What happens to common sense? The audacity!

People that should have been the one championing the DNA cause to clean their dirty image..

When you talk about it, they'll quickly say the child can be switched, but is that not the more reason to carry out the test? Abi you won train and breastfeed pikin wey no be your own?.. the line they're using as a defence is even working against them and common sense but in their haste to defend their ahewo moves and wickedness, they can't see it..

DNA test is not just a prove that the child is the man's but by extension, it proves that the child belongs to both parents, as children can be swapped right?..

So what is the issue actually?

See ehn, if your babe or wife is against it, and at the same time use that line about children being swapped as a defence, Baba just forget, your woman dey cheat.. run to a DNA test centre immediately before it gets too late..

God loves it when we realise something or encounter something new to us, even if our discoveries are common knowledge. Isn't that a normal parental reaction when our children discover new things? When you keep asking the right questions, God will keep giving you the right answers.
