Oyo State Govt Explains How WAEC Student Was Gunned Down Mistakenly By Police

The Oyo State Government has explained the circumstances surrounding the death of a WASSCE student who was hit by a stray bullet on the 20th of May 2025 while on his way to an exam center.

The incident occurred when the student's father, driving a tinted black Honda Accord with registration number FST 639 JU, drove against traffic on Alakia Old Road at around 7:30 am.

OYRTMA officials, backed by police, had embarked on a traffic operation on the road due to complaints of constant one-way violations that had led to deaths and life-threatening injuries. The police presence was necessary due to previous assaults on OYRTMA officials, including the recent killing of one official by a traffic offender.

During an attempt to apprehend the traffic offender, a police officer, who is already under investigation by the state police command, allegedly fired a shot at one of the tyres, which missed its target and hit the student, resulting in his death.

  1. One thing that is becoming a major issue in this country is accountability.

For every sad incident, rather than owning up, they always try to meander through and make excuses, in order to exonerate themselves from the calamity caused.
    We need to do better.

    2. Thank you so much The Beloved One. This country is finished and it is so sad that nothing seems to be changing. Instead of acknowledging the system is failing Nigerians, they will do anything to fault the victim. I feel so sad!

  6. I don't understand, please make me understand Police. What are you people saying? What are you vomiting from your mouth as an excuse?Instead of you to own up and take accountability you are explaining.Explaining what exactly? How the father and child would have died because you shot at a moving car's tyre? You definitely would have killed them both if that bullet got the tyre. Why did you shoot?why? Please I want to understand this very wicked, evil and deadly explanation given for killing a human,a minor at that.I hate it when children die,That innocent boy had plans,he had ambitions,he had his future mapped out,he wanted to make a difference,he woke up happy and excited yesterday. You TOOK ALL THAT AWAY.You didn't give him a chance/choice and you are busy explaining how you meant to kill father and child?

  12. This their explanation stinks and it's an insult to the deceased. No empathy, no apology, no accountability, nothing just excuses and blame game.
