  1. So true! The things we go through abroad ehn? Only God keeps us going on. The amount of menial job I did before I became a nurse. It was only God that made a way. I lost hope and faith so many times but God never left my side. I wanted to become a doctor but the amount of money and time required were a deterrent for me but I'm still grateful because I love my nursing job. The pay is good and by God's grace, I will get married soon and have my kids. So before you think about leaving know that things are not easy abroad as many make you think.

  5. Better to serve in heaven than to reign in hell jare.
You will see some DR and you'll wonder if they're real Dr or native Dr cos Nigeria has dealt with them. Besides he's sacrificing for the children's future,he knows they have brighter future there than here.

    This is my own opinion

    3. The notion that their kids have a brighter future abroad, isn't always the case.

Unlike with how education is set up in our region, public school allocation is set via catchment areas. So the neighbourhood you live is where your kids have to attend school. If you live in a run-down, crime-riddled area, because that is what you can afford as an immigrant still trying to find your feet...then your kids are going to attend under-funded, under-performing schools. Meanwhile, in Nigeria, they were attending private schools that taught international curriculums.

Why do you think so many immigrant families are sending their kids back home to attend school? When you have to work multiple jobs to make ends meet, your kids fall through the cracks and and can easily be influenced to join gangs and be truant.

  8. Does plane crashes stop people from traveling by plane? No
Does road accidents stop people from traveling by road? No

Same with "Japaing". Sad tales won't still stop people from venturing into relocation.

In all you do, strategize. Cross your "Ts" and dot your "Is".
People that relocated and were successful do not have ten heads. You can be victorious too.

  9. Dr Olumide Emmanuel addressed this in a 4 part series. "Before you join the japa bandwagon."

You can search for them on YouTube to update your mind. Things are not always greener on the other side.

  13. That is why it is advised to make your research properly before you japa! Common sense abi? This is not the case, as many people relocate without making necessary enquiries, so when they get there and stay for a while without plucking money from the trees, they begin to nag!

But if you go there with the knowledge that it will take sometime to settle in your chosen career, it makes it easier to set expectations and adjust.

I came here years ago with this in mind, knowing that I'd have to lower my expectations and just get menial jobs to go by, while I work on my certifications. I did all sorts, from working as a toilet cleaner, to series of dish washing experiences, hmmm, my dear people, if I had built my castles in the air, I would have been depressed!

Knowing that this takes time, I focused on what was helping to pay my bills, and ultimately my goal!
Today, to the glory of God, I am am an early childhood supervisor, with a decent salary, two houses to our names, decent savings for my family and I, two of my siblings recently joined me, others to follow in a bit, my mom has been here for a couple of years now.

Patience, my people, this is not to discourage those who prefer to stay back home to focus on their careers, but it is just to encourage those who want to japa, LEGALLY, to understand the process. Rome was not built in a day, with time you will smile and understand that in a few years, you'd recover what is taking you so long to achieve now in naija.

If someone had told me that I'd be where I am today, a nursery school teacher of 12 years ago in naija, I would laughed that person off! But I give all honour and glory to God, who made this possible.

  14. A butcher that is well paid than his medical doctor earnings or building in Nigeria. Do the math's. The exchange rate and the minimum wage abroad with a working system is far more better than naija.

    1. If he's proud of the job or earns so much, why was he hiding from people? You can never compare being a doctor to a butcher not matter the country you're in......
