Nigerian Nurses Begin 7-Day Warning Strike Over Poor Working Conditions

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM-FHI),have started a seven-day warning strike, which began at midnight on July 30, 2025...

The Association says the strike became necessary after the government ignored their demands for better pay and working conditions.

‎The union had earlier given the government a 15-day deadline on July 14, but no action was taken.

‎According to the union’s National Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, the government failed to talk with them or address their concerns. Even if the government responds now, he said, the strike will continue until the end of the planned seven days.

The Nurses are asking for.....

‎- Better shift and uniform allowances
‎- A separate salary structure just for nurses
‎- Increased duty allowance
‎- More hiring of nurses
‎- A dedicated nursing department in the Ministry of Health

‎Rilwan explained that this strike came from the nurses themselves, not just the leaders, because they are tired of being ignored. He added that the nurses are not worried about losing pay during the strike they just want change.

‎He also pointed out that nurses have tolerated poor treatment for over 40 years, often lacking even basic equipment like gloves.

‎The strike is set to end on August 5, 2025. If the government still doesn't act, the union says it will issue a new 21-day warning, which could lead to a full, indefinite strike.

‎Some hospitals, like FMC Ebute-Metta and Lagos University Teaching Hospital, are not joining the strike because they are no longer part of the union. But most other federal hospitals nationwide, including those in Abuja and Lagos, are participating.
