The idea of School Reunions, makes a lot of sense. Ex-classmates come together to catch up, donate cash and gift items to their alma mater, assist each other, have fun dinners/parties, etc.
ReplyDeleteHowever, for most, there's been a deviation from the original idea.
Nowadays, it's mostly a convergence of gossips, to discuss who got married, who drives the latest cars, who has the flyest job, who is globetrotting, bla bla bla.....🙄
Abeg make nobody add me for any reunion Whatsapp group. The time wey we been spend together for school, don do....

My own alumni group always come together to help who needs help. Even when I was earning 19800 as a teacher, I would always attend and meet up with my ex school mates, some were bank managers and one particular person was even a top shot at Halliburton. Never felt inferior and was never made to feel out of place.
DeleteSometimes, I think a lot of these thoughts are in the mind of those that actually haven’t made it and then they end up projecting their insecurities on those that even tho are rich only came to just be in the same space with their old school mates!

@eka Joy oh, i refuse to agree with u on this. just say that your mindset is different..Reunion IS ALWAYS A SHOW OFF and those who are strong minded eh na God they help them...I was so pissed with this show off from my classmates and billing money wise unnecessarily not caring if the less fortunate among us had or not...I fought them all and scattered the whatsapp group (LOL) and those of us with sense migrated to another whatsapp group where we r quietly helping those who need it,
DeleteEven sch groups with all of dem abroad, the competition is mad but i think the competition is also part of the fun except that it hurts those that have not made it....
If you want your mental health in check, avoid sch reunions if you have not made it yet....

DeleteWe use to hold our re-union every end of the Year. That platform hhas helped a lot of us . We have also contributed a lot te our alma mater. OC##S💕
What is the fun in reunion if you don't catch up on what has been going on in each other's life after school? Many of my sec, school mates have gone on to do very big things, some of us are still coming up while some fell off, we still attend the reunion and it's always fun. I won't miss it for anything, those guys are my gees for life.
DeleteMiss aboki, you and I really do think alike. Stella, maybe it’s ur school oh. Our own WhatsApp group is still standing even after several years. We get very rich, rich, average, poor for there and we all communicate like we are still in school with no one doing better. Once someone is even something, we all rally round to contribute and the person collecting the money is not even allowed to mention how much each person contributed so you don’t even know who dropped a huge sum and who dropped peanuts. That way, equality is kinda maintained.
DeleteWe are planning a huge reunion soon to mark our 20years and a lot of people will be coming from wherever they are now based and I’m even looking forward to it.
I won’t even forget when we will hang out in Lagos and one person (can be anyone) will book uber to take me back to my ikorodu that year cos it would run till late and they won’t want me to leave early.
Wo!!! The memories of our hangout is coming back again jare. Thanks to this post.
I don’t know about ur school, but I’ve never sensed any unhealthy showoff in mine even tho I was probably one of the poorest then.

Put yourself in others' shoes and try to see things from their point of view. That's one of the great keys to working with clients, pleasing customers, sustaining a marriage, raising children, pastoring people, helping those who are less fortunate, etc. Live by this Scripture: 'All of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tender-hearted, be courteous' (1 Peter 3:8 NKJV). Try to look beyond yourself, your own pursuits and your own world.
When you decide to reflect upon an issue from every possible angle,
(a) look at it in light of another person's history, (b) find out the interests and concerns of others, and
(c) lay aside your own plan and try to see what others see. That's a powerful thing because it means you are truly connecting with them. If you join in any kind of group or team activity, you know how vital it is that each person sees the whole picture and not just their own part. Anytime a person doesn't recognise how their work fits in with that of their teammates, the whole team suffers. The better a team member grasps the big picture, the greater their potential to work with the team.
Getting along with people and working with them requires effort: getting to know their needs, goals, hurts and struggles. That's what Jesus does with us. The Bible says that he can 'sympathise with our weaknesses' (Hebrews 4:15 NKJV). To follow in his footsteps, you must endeavour to do that with others.

House I need advice.
ReplyDeleteI withdrew my children from their former school, though the school is good academically but they lack basic amenities and aesthetics like the new school I took them,I as expecting the new school to exceed my expectations cos it's times 4 of the fee we were paying in their former school but this school is just like their former school academically and they lack discipline and some of their teachers are just wearing suit up and down they don't know how to teach.
Please is it a wise decision to return them back to the former school? Hope it won't affect their self esteem and their studies? Or I should take them to another school with good reviews. Most parents are talking of withdrawing from this new school cos it seems it a sham
