Abia State Gov Otti Warns Pregnant Women Against Patronising Traditional Birth Attendants

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has once again criticized some pregnant women for opting to deliver with traditional birth attendants rather than at government hospitals.

Otti stated this at Ohiya Primary Health Centre, Umuahia South LGA while operationalizing the retrofitted facility, regretting that many women have lost their lives due to uncontrolled complications at the traditional birth places.

The Governor who was represented by Abia State Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Oggbonnaya Uche, said his administration is intentional about the lives of mothers and children, hence the retrofitting of 200 PHCs across all the wards in the Abia.

He reiterated his resolve to take decisive action against operators of such traditional birth places to safeguard the lives of expectant mothers, urging community leaders to take ownership of the facility.
The Governor disclosed that the state government would also build staff quarters for health workers and encouraged residents to make full use of the centre.

He informed that the centre is equipped with modern facilities including an automatic external defibrillator, radiant warmer, vital signs monitor for pregnant women, ultrasound, parameter machine, weighing scale, general laboratory, and auto analyser among others.
Also speaking, the Mayor of Umuahia South LGA, Chinedu Enwereuzo who expressed gratitude to the Governor for the projects, charged traditional ruler of Ohiya to protect the equipment from vandals.

  1. I can't recall vividly if it was Fashola regime or one of the Ogun State governors who brought different dimension to traditional birth attendants.
Firstly, it is hard to eradicate them from our society because they are the closest to the people and they've built acceptance and trust over time, it's not even about money or being poor, some people trust them pass doctors.
Secondly, forget what we see on social media, the largest population live in rural area where primary health care is difficult to access due to bad road and lack of other social amentities.
Train the traditional birth attendants , give them practical trainings, bring them into the the system and make them feel valuable, get them registered and licensed, link them to a hospital where they can transfer difficult birth to, once they see a new or not well trained trado in their community, they will report such person.
