Nigerian Govt Clarifies That Maths And English Remains Compulsory For O’Level Students

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially clarified that English Language and Mathematics remain compulsory subjects for all students sitting for their O’Level examinations, despite recent adjustments to tertiary admission guidelines

A new admission framework had sparked confusion, especially after reports suggested that Mathematics might no longer be required for students pursuing Arts and Humanities.
The Federal Ministry of Education, through its spokesperson Boriowo Folasade, emphasized that while tertiary institutions may adopt more flexible admission criteria, no student is exempt from registering and sitting for English and Maths at the O’Level.
There you go!

  1. I said it here that it was a wrong move made by our darling square peg in a round hole and one anon came for me, claiming that the Minister was an Associate Prof ๐Ÿ˜‚, Where's the anon now?eji Associate Prof eyim egwu?you can be an Associate Prof and make mistakes, you can be an Associate Prof and not know much about another discipline that is not yours.
    Thank God they've corrected themselves.

    1. No mistake was made, most of us understood what he said, because they are just reverting to what was obtainable before. I am a law graduate and i had F9 in my WAEC, yet i got admission, and that is exactly what he said even the first time, he is still repeating same thing he said earlier, for people like you that didn’t understand the first time. Students must sit for the core subjects, but depending on ur course of choice in the university, Maths won’t be a condition for ur admission into higher institution.

    2. Maybe they need to spell it out in a better way for people like you to understand better. You'll use F9, not even a pass in Maths in 2025 to enter school and still do basic calculation courses like CSC and Philosophy of Science.Wait and hear the interpretation from schools.

    3. Put that your F9 Maths claim away, you should need at least knowledge of basic Maths for admission into any course, which is a pass in Maths .And yes,it was a correction.

    4. No, i don’t need any maths no matter how basic to study Law, i dint need it then and i have not needed it in my 14yrs of practice, so asking students that would study Law, mass communication, History, political science, international relations and all the other Arts courses is an anomaly that needed to be corrected, and thank God they did.

  4. Anon 16:36. very correct. This is exactly how i understood it. You must study them and sit for them . However ,for arts students you did not need to have a C for admission and same with science students. They did not need a C in English for admission. I also come from the era when Maths was not a prerequisite for admission . I was an Arts(its now called Humanities) student.
