EFCC Arraigns Former Labour Minister Chris Ngige Over Alleged ₦2.2 Billion Fraud Allegations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned former Nigerian Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on charges of fraud totaling ₦2.2 billion.

The allegations stem from his tenure between 2015 and 2023, during which he allegedly misused his position to award unauthorized contracts and divert funds from the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).

Ngige, who pleaded not guilty, faces eight counts of fraud and abuse of office under the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act.

The charges include unauthorized payments of ₦177 million to NSITF contractors and the diversion of ₦2.2 billion through various schemes involving associates and shell companies. Following his plea, he was remanded to Kuje Prison pending bail proceedings.
