Nigerian Air Force Personnel Detained In Burkina Faso After Emergency Landing

Alliance of Sahel States (AES) announced the detention of 11 Nigerian Air Force personnel in Burkina Faso following an emergency landing of their C-130 aircraft in Bobo-Dioulasso.

The AES claims the aircraft violated restricted airspace without authorization, escalating tensions between Nigeria and the AES nations—Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
The AES, formed in 2023 as a counter to ECOWAS, has been empowered since late 2024 to neutralize unauthorized aircraft entering its airspace. The detention of the Nigerian personnel is seen as a direct response to perceived aggression from ECOWAS, particularly Nigeria's actions in Benin.
