Actor KOK Says YouTube Saved Nollywood From Movie Marketers

Veteran Nollywood star Kanayo O. Kanayo has credited YouTube with transforming the Nigerian film industry, rescuing it from what he described as an era dominated by powerful movie marketers whose influence stifled creativity and opportunities for actors.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, Kanayo recalled a period when 10-12 actors were suspended annually on vague allegations like "unholy conduct"
Kanayo described the marketers' control as oppressive, with actors facing suspension without fair hearing.

At the time, he noted, marketers enforced a ₦500,000 fee on any actor who wanted to become a marketer, a sum he described as deliberately punitive given that the average Nollywood film budget was around ₦800,000.
