Catholic Cathedral In Anambra State Dedicated In Grand Ceremony

On January 14, 2026, the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi achieved a long awaited milestone with the dedication and opening of the magnificent Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption in Nnewi, Anambra State.

The event drew an impressive gathering of Church leaders, including His Eminence Francis Cardinal Arinze as chief celebrant, alongside other prominent figures such as His Eminence Peter Cardinal Okpaleke, Archbishop Valerian Okeke of Onitsha, the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, and dozens of bishops and priests over seventy five in total.

The Mass featured traditional elements like the blessing of statues of the twelve apostles and a grand procession that highlighted the cathedral's new status as a central place of worship for the diocese.

The cathedral, located in Okwuani, Nnewi, has been under construction for more than 13 years. It stands as one of the most impressive church buildings in Nigeria, blending striking architecture with rich interior artistry.

The dedication brought together a wide cross section of people, including Anambra State Governor Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, who attended and offered prayers for the cathedral to serve as a source of spiritual growth and hope for the faithfuls.
This new cathedral replaces earlier structures and fulfills a vision long held by the Nnewi Catholic community since the diocese was established in 2001. It now serves as the mother church for the diocese's many parishes and priests, symbolizing faith, perseverance, and communal devotion

    1. It wouldn't be nice if they don't because late Sen. Ifeanyi was one of those who supported the cathedral building.

  3. Lol, Jewelu there's even a video to this where one knight was protesting cos Ifeanyo Uba's name was ommitted from among the names prayed for during the Mass. The knight said he's renouncing Christianity that what the 'church' did was evil. Shouting Ifeanyi ndo !!!

    2. I had waited to see that post here but it hasn't surface. I think I will say the church didn't do right. Late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah single handedly built that cathedral 80% from the story we heard. He wasn't duly acknowledged. At least the Bishop would have elaborated his huge sacrifice and a minute silent would have been observed on his mention.

The Bishop only mentioned him as one of the contributors. So wrong for someone who spent billions on 80% of the project.

This life just pray to stay alive. People actually move on so quick.

    3. How did Late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah make the billions he donated?

That's why the church should be spiritually sensitive to who they collect money as offerings or donations fr
