Nigerian Soldier Arrested After Allegedly Defrauding Victims of ₦114m With Fake Hero Story

A serving Nigerian Army soldier has been arrested for allegedly defrauding multiple victims of more than ₦114 million after falsely claiming he played a major role in the 2010 military operation that killed notorious Abia kidnap kingpin, Obioma Nwankwo, popularly known as “Osisikankwu.”

The soldier, Staff Sgt. Amoke Simon, reportedly convinced people, including Abia State Government that he was a hero of the operation. His claims earned him public praise from Governor Alex Otti, who even promised overseas medical treatment for a leg injury Simon said he sustained during the raid.

However, military investigations revealed that Simon was never part of the 2010 mission. Officers who participated in the operation confirmed he was not involved, and records also disproved his claims of being wounded while fighting Boko Haram in the North-East.

According to investigators, Simon used these fabricated stories to obtain money from the Abia State Government, private individuals, and a company. He allegedly collected about ₦100 million from a firm, ₦6 million from one individual, and ₦8 million from a group. The EFCC had reportedly been monitoring him for similar fraud cases.
He was arrested at the Port Harcourt International Airport while attempting to travel to Abuja.
Joint teams from the 14 Brigade and 6 Division Provost Groups carried out the operation after reviewing multiple complaints of fraud and impersonation.

Simon, a member of the Nigerian Army Engineers Corps based in Lagos, is expected to be transferred back to his unit for full investigation and disciplinary action.

  2. As for Simon... He will face the music for his crimes.
My own is that this story has reminded me of the level of insecurity we faced back then, the rat races, different sounds of guns that lasts for hours during his weekly, monthly operations or is it their last visit to NNPC DEPOT and banks along that road where they massacred people, from adults to children, civilians to police officers, everybody collect. Dead and injured people everywhere!

  3. And yet, the real heros have not been named by lazy OAPs. The degree of laziness of the press corps is award worthy.

    1. My question exactly. How did he get through all the strict protocols before getting an audience with the governor? I'm glad he caught before traveling out.
