ReplyDeleteJUST WORK TOWARDS IT . NOTHING GOOD COMES EASY
DeleteWork towards it. Its good to experience other culture.
DeleteI never travel outside Nigeria
ReplyDeleteThe year was 2013.
ReplyDeleteI was on my way to Shanghai, China, having been chosen as my university’s representative for the Exchange Student Programme. Selected by the VC himself. Somebody say GRACE! 😁
Funny how life moves.
One minute, I was heartbroken that I couldn’t graduate with my mates in January 2013… the next minute, I was the student with the highest CGPA, which caught the VC's attention. Still feels surreal when I think about it.
My first stop was Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I had about a 5-hour layover before my connecting flight to Bangkok. And, I did not speak to anybody that wasn’t in uniform at any of those airports. Not one person. The warning I received before leaving Lagos? I carried it on my head like WAEC result.🤣
Somewhere in that Bangkok airport, I ate something I have never forgotten till today… mango rice 😁
I don’t even know what possessed me to try it, but that taste? Stuck with me.
From Bangkok to Shanghai, and finally to my hotel… that whole journey felt like I was living inside a dream I didn’t even know I qualified for.
But something shifted in me on that trip.
That was the first time I truly saw the world beyond what I knew. Different people, different systems, different possibilities. My mind opened in ways I can’t fully explain, and honestly, it hasn’t closed since.
I remember the sweet, smiling housekeeper who would come to clean my room, Room 2005. Every time she walked in, it was “ni hao” with the biggest smile. 😁 That simple moment stayed with me.
That was also where something else started for me.
In every country I’ve visited since then, I make sure I give something (or things) special to someone. A small gesture, but it means a lot to me. It began right there in Shanghai, China.
I even captured my experience in a song, which I performed during our send-forth ceremony. Imagine that… me, turning memories into music. 😁😊
And it’s only gotten better.
13 years later, 6 countries visited, 9 visa stamps in my passport… and I’m still going. Still learning. Still becoming.
That little girl who once dreamed of being an Ambassador?
Yeah… we’re well on our way. 😊
Ron
I've never left Nigeria and I'm almost 40. God please do it for me
ReplyDeleteThat would be Cameroun 😊
ReplyDeleteIt was for business and I went just once. Was way back in school when I was venturing into small small business...traveling by road was a bit safer then 🚗 We traveled through Calabar to Yaounde. The journey was long and tiring 🥹 The heat alone was enough to drive us crazy. Na me want do business na, so I persevered. The worse part was the constant police stops to check vehicles 😨 That took a whole lot of time. The whole journey was tiring.
But what made up for the road trauma was the beautiful people we met there. They were friendly and warm 🤗 and they had lovely resorts. I didn't stay long though as we got goods we came for on time.
Also their food can turn someone into orobo overnight (plantain & fish sauce) and other delicacies 😄
I enjoyed my short visit there 🍹
My first trip was to Togo as part of a school program. We went by road. Of course since it was a school program we were chaperoned. It was a nice experience. Since then other trips outside the country have happened but none to the big ones(Europe/US/UK/Canada). Hope to go to one of them some day.
ReplyDeleteMy first trip outta Naija that year was to Egypt- Cairo and Alexandra, courtesy my generous boss, that same year (3 months apart) she took me to the U.S. That Egypt trip was such a memorable experience for me; up till now, each time I think about that opportunity, my heart always say a word of prayer for that my madam. She gave me the first hand experience, and a glance into Travels and educational tours. That contribution has profoundly shaped my thinking and the person I’ve become.
