Drama King Teejay's CORNER

I returned home one night, and met a friend who works at in the popular betting shop fuming in anger in front of his workplace. Immediately, I stepped back to enquire what the matter was all about.

He explained to me how his wife had created a scene right inside the shop in the presence of customers and onlookers who were passing by. Let me give a clear picture of what really happened. This young man in his mid thirties with two kids works for a betshop owner and his take home salary at the end of the month is ₦20,000 plus some top-up he gets on the daily which could be up to three to four thousands daily if not more depending on the sales and customer's winning. He quitted his teaching job for it. I wouldn't know why such decision. Provisions and family upkeep was taking a toll on him, he decided to sell his Android phone as to raise money for the wife to start something little.

They had both discussed about the small business to start which was her frying Yam and potatoes. Already she has the utensils for it. All what was needed was buying of Yam, potatoes and groundnut oil to start. She was hoping for the money from her husband not knowing he sold his phone earlier that day he had promised giving her money to go to the market and buy those things.

When she finally received the money and was told it was the phone that was sold, she flared up and queried him, "why would you do such a thing? There was no words she didn't use on him according to the narration. Her grouse was that, she uses the phone to watch films and so many films were downloaded on it already.

I asked who has the phone? It was him. I told him actually if truth must be told, he didn't do right. He asked how? I told him I won't lie to him, he should have carried his wife along letting her to know of his intention of wanting to sell the phone. Yes the phone is his but seeking his wife opinion would have been better than acting all alone. The woman vowed she will never touch the money or do the business saying if he had told her, she would have looked for a means to borrow for it. That singular statement made the man not to sleep at home that night. The next day, I learnt some persons spoke to them and they reconciled. Today, she has started the business and gradually picking up.

I have advised him not to look up to his wife to be handling the home responsibilities because she has started something. He should look for something better to do than that meagre salary work he's doing. As a man, three responsibilities bestowed upon you by nature is, 1. Sheltering your family(Periodic rent) 2. Provisions in the home which is your shield. 3.

The children school fees. Never relegate any of this to your wife. The day she starts feeding you or paying the rent, she becomes the man of the house and you loses your respect. She can support if she so wish but not her duty to do that. She can choose to sort the kitchen aspect and the children's wears if she's a kind woman earning well in business or work. He assured me, he will look for something better. I wish him success on that. Really not easy out there on most men with family. It's my sincere prayer for the strength to keep them going and ease the burden on them.

To every married woman out there, appreciate your man's effort always. It has a way of prolonging their lifespan on earth.

  1. If my math serves me correct the bet shop has the potential to pay anywhere from 80,000-140,000 naira based on what you stated. It may not have the noble esteem of saying you are a teacher but it pays better, and your friend likely made that decision so as to be a better provider for his family. He has made a sacrifice because working in a bet shop isn’t viewed as anything to talk about. Unfortunately, in hard times ppl have to be able to be flexible and he has done that.

TJ, I don’t think even you recognized that this man has made a significant sacrifice. Maybe he could have gone into private tutoring but that would take time to build up clients. He just went fast for what was quick and easily accessible.

I hope they both find success through their ventures and they draw closer together and support each other. The wife appears problematic, but only he knows why he married a dragon lady.
