Football Legend Jay Jay Okocha Receives Award For Iconic 1998 World Cup Performance

Football legend Augustine “Jay Jay” Okocha has received a retroactive “Superior Player of the Match” award for his iconic performance in Nigeria’s 3–2 win over Spain at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

The special honour was presented as part of a new initiative by Michelob ULTRA in partnership with global football platform Copa90, created to celebrate standout World Cup performances from tournaments held before the official Player of the Match award was introduced in 2002.

According to the organisers, the project involved digging through extensive World Cup archives to identify players whose brilliance shaped unforgettable matches. Okocha’s masterclass against Spain, a game widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest World Cup moments, earned him the prestigious recognition nearly three decades later.

The award reinforces Okocha’s status as one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers, a creative force whose skill, flair and influence continue to inspire fans around the world.
