Former HOS Abdusalami Says Late MKO Abiola Collapsed During Meeting With US Envoys, Not Poisoned

Former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) has revealed that late Chief MKO Abiola was not poisoned, but collapsed during a meeting with US envoys shortly before his death.

In his newly released book, “Abdulsalami Abubakar: The Path of Duty,” the retired general recounted the tense moments leading to Abiola’s death, describing it as one of the most painful experiences of his life.

According to Abdulsalami, “Abiola was meeting with two US officials when he suddenly slumped. All efforts to revive him failed. He was not poisoned as widely speculated.”

He explained that medical reports confirmed Abiola died of natural causes linked to health complications, not foul play. Abdulsalami added that he had already planned to announce Abiola’s release before the tragedy struck.

Abiola’s death on July 7, 1998, remains one of Nigeria’s most controversial political moments, but Abdulsalami insists there was no conspiracy, only a tragic medical emergency.
