Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema Says Nigeria’s Aviation Sector Could Collapse Within 30 Days

Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema has warned that Nigeria’s aviation industry could collapse within thirty days without urgent government intervention. He says mounting financial pressure, rising operational costs and regulatory challenges have pushed local airlines to the brink.

Onyema criticised the heavy direct taxation imposed on domestic carriers, noting that global aviation standards require airlines to generate government revenue indirectly, not through multiple direct charges. He also cautioned labour unions against picketing airlines over ticket sales charge remittances, warning that other operators may shut down in solidarity.

Nigeria’s aviation sector is currently battling severe financial distress, skyrocketing Jet A1 fuel prices, foreign exchange scarcity and growing debts between airlines and regulatory agencies. Passengers now face chronic delays and cancellations as carriers struggle to stay afloat.

Onyema insists that without immediate government support, the industry risks a total shutdown.
