Billionaire Tony Elumelu Corrects Trainee Who Addressed Him By His First Name
Nigerian billionaire and UBA Group Chairman Tony Elumelu went viral after firmly correcting a graduate trainee who greeted him casually as “Good morning, Tony” during an interactive session at a banking school graduation event.

The trainee stood up with a microphone and addressed him by his first name, but Elumelu immediately stopped her and made it clear that he does not subscribe to Western‑style informality in professional settings.
He told her:
“You won’t call me Tony. You’ll call me Mr Elumelu or TOE. I don’t subscribe to that kind of Oyinbo life.”

What if it's her father in that position or a colleague at work. Will she call her own father by his first name without any iota of respect? nop.

That's exactly what I told my friends - in the banking sector, these founders, Chairmen and CEOs tell you to address them by their first names during Orientation of new employees (graduate trainees).
I guess she just wanted to trend.

It is the culture of their organization, and I believe that this was what the trainee was taught in the Bank's training school. She is only practicing what she was trained to do. I have also undergone such training before.
Or am I missing something?

A lot of men wouldn’t have taken offence if the offender were a pretty damsel. Mr. Chairman didn’t find the girl pleasing to his eyes, and that’s why he took offence. If it were a pretty damsel like Ehi, I’m sure he would have just smiled.

DeleteIt helps to remove the bureaucracy of hierarchy and encourage ideas and knowledge-sharing from young minds.
Segun Agbaje of GTBank modelled this first-name and open doors policy and that really helped in generating business from the younger generation and undergraduates.
By the way, I didn’t work in GTBank but I have close friends who did.
She is not uncouth. I worked in the banking industry for several years, and this is what we were encouraged to do. To always use first names. Even the MD requested to be addressed by his first name.

ReplyDeleteShe could have shown more tact by addressing him as "Mr." to avoid disrespect. Even if she was taught differently, adding a title would have allowed for correction without causing offence. Addressing him casually was a bit dismissive, and not apologizing after being corrected seemed like she didn't care. She just kept going like nothing happened. So uncultured! π
