What triggered the action was the transfer of huge amounts from state accounts into multiple company accounts starting on August 2, prompting a Post No Debit order to stop further withdrawals.
In its statement, the EFCC described the freeze as a preventive measure to protect public funds. The agency acknowledged the upcoming August 15 Osun governorship election but said it cannot overlook possible looting simply because an election is near. It added that it monitors the finances of other states as well and remains non‑partisan.
