NCoS Sacks Prison Officials After Death Row Inmate Hosts TikTok Live From Jail

The Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, has removed the Officer in Charge of Ibara Medium Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and two other senior officers.
The action followed a viral TikTok live stream by an inmate on death row, Elijah Oyebode.

According to NCoS, the incident was a serious breach of custodial security and violated prison rules. The statement was issued on Thursday by the Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections, JN Osuji.

Oyebode was sentenced to death by hanging in 2019 for murdering Rofiat Adebisi, a final year student of Osun State University. Court records showed he gave conflicting accounts before denying involvement.

Despite being on death row, Oyebode allegedly used a mobile phone to go live on TikTok. Reports say one of his accounts reached Level 20 gifting status, which allowed him to receive money during livestreams.

Investigators also linked him to another account that was allegedly used to impersonate a TikTok creator and activist.
The NCoS said the law is clear. Under the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019, any officer who helps an inmate use a phone can face up to 3 years in jail or a fine of up to N3,000,000.

The service said it will continue to punish any officer found to be aiding indiscipline and that discipline is key to keeping custodial centres secure.

  4. Don't sack him, let him serve jail term before sacking, this will serve as deterrent to others.
