The Delta State Police Command has arrested the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, and four others over the death of Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a deputy director in the ministry.
The incident occurred on Thursday, September 24, 2026, inside the commissioner’s office at the Prof. Chike Odozien Secretariat, Asaba. Adeda was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, where he died the next day.
Police initially arrested one aide, Lucky Adoh, and declared two others Enos Attah and Oputa Okestine wanted. The commissioner and three additional suspects were later taken into custody, bringing the total arrests to five.
Two more people, Mrs. Clementine Ufuoma, Director of Basic and Secondary Education, and Clement Apia, the commissioner’s driver, have been asked to report for questioning.
Police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe confirmed the arrests, adding that the Homicide Section of the State CID is reviewing video footage, eyewitness accounts, and medical reports.
Ashibogwu denies ordering or participating in any assault, claiming he only intervened after Adeda became violent.
The Nigeria Labour Congress briefly shut down the secretariat in protest, while the state government has set up an administrative panel of inquiry. Officials say no one found culpable will be shielded.
Condolences have been sent to Adeda’s family.

The way people beat other people to death is absolutely and totally shocking.Its an animal behaviour,like how did it get so bad that you beat this elderly person to death?

And nobody is holding them accountable because they settled their way out of it.Today makes it 4 weeks of the k*lling and I am still traumatised.
